Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
« on: December 13, 2015, 05:17:01 PM »

I have only been in Indy once, for the U.S. Nationals 1987, and did not take the time to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Before I left home for PRI, I had made myself a promise that I would indeed go there this time.
I went today and all I can say is the WOW factor is incredible! Cars from beginning of the 500, to winners I remember from decades ago, all the way to the present! There is also a very good 20 minute video that tells the history of the Speedway.
If you are ever in Indy, this should be VERY HIGH on your list.

Here is my Google Photos link:

As usual with all pics I post, I hope you enjoy.

Ahh, the Leader Card cars.  Bob Wilke owned them, and his company, now called Leader Paper, is run by his grandson, who is a customer of mine.

Milwaukee's racing history - looking good there, Gregg.

They were involved in USAC, Midgets, and as a side business, sold race cars along with their stationery for a lot of years.

Robert also owned a number of custom Ferraris back in the day.

Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it very much.  The Museum sure has changed and expanded since my visit back in '64 as a side trip to the National Drags at IRP.  Also was lucky enough to catch some tire testing that day, first car around the turn in front of us was AJ in the #1 roadster!  After a few laps a pause and then Don Branson in one of the first back motor Offy's for a few more laps, yellow #4 or#5 IIRC.

Chris

Listening to Roger Ward in the Leader Card roadster dueling with Jim Rathman as Sid Collins let his turn announcers "take it around the track" in the closing laps as the tire treads wore away was an unforgetable listen for me.

Ah the flying W's, Watson, Ward and Wilke. My favorite was the Rudi Caracciola trophy case 20' long and 7' high chock full of silver.

It's worth stopping every time you go to Indy. They rotate the collection because I believe they only have about a third of the collection on display at any one time. I do know a couple of people who have been on the other levels where the rest of the cars are stored. I guess it's really impressive what's there.

Thanks for the pictures.

I spent about 5 hours there 3 years ago while waiting to fly back home. Could have spent 5 days and still not had my fill of all the history and technology on display.

Evan the bus ride around the track is worth the time, you kinda get an idea in your mind of just what it would be like to go into turn 1 or 3 at 230 MPH, WOW! Now that would be a ride.

Johnnie, I agree about the bus ride around the track.  It musta been in the late 70s that I took the tour and the ride -- and I did have shivers down my back when entering turn one at a scorching 40 mph or whatever.  It didn't matter -- I was riding on THE racetrack.  Yet another one of the very cool experiences we've all managed to have, one way or another, in this racing hobby.

Wow, I just noticed this Great pics of the Indy cars , For my taste , The couple years with The Yellow Submarine Johnny Rutherfords Penzoil car, Tom Snevas Texaco star ,  The # 66 Sunoco car of Mark Donahue , And that Dominos Car that Arie Lyendyke set some crazy lap times in on the last happy hours before qual. I think he did laps with 233 MPH or 236 MPH Average for the lap !
Great pics, Now if anyone has pics of the Honda Motegi Or Ducati Factory Museums  ?
Thanks, DW
