Wow, the salt looked pretty good. AND they were able to get 14 miles of straight line course.

A bit of an anecdote regarding the timing trailer, and particularly the sign.

BMC did a lot of record setting on the salt during the 1950s, and they used the same timing trailer over the years, but if you note the sign, at 3:44 . . .

It has the AAA logo on it.

At 9:04 in Sid's video, you see the same trailer with the same sign, but the AAA painted over.

This was after LeMans in '55, and after Triple A got out of sanctioning events.

But yes, a 10 mile circle, capable of operating under 24 hours of use.

Sid, I'd love to see some pictures of that equipment.

You can't find 7 miles of great salt out there these days, let alone lay out a 10 mile circle.
Been a lot of strip mining out there since 1956... all the salt you see in that video was shipped out on rail cars years ago.  :x

I found a lot of that old USAC stuff in a shed behind the old Western Texaco Station. I rescued what I wanted & Richard Dixon (old Bonneville Museum) took the rest. They must have run multiple teams at times because I have large 6ft pit signs with BMC, Campbell, Bluebird & Longines Chronometers Timing on them. The shed was falling in & not weather proof. I also have some of the kerosene lanterns they marked the course at night with too.
I will donate all this stuff to the new museum if it gets built but since you are the BMC nut I will give you that sign Mate.
The older racers will remember the big pictures hanging in the old Salt Flats Cafe on the mail street, I have the one of the Mickey's Challenger & the one with John Cobb standing beside the Railton Special in 1939 & both these are currently undergoing restoration in Seattle.

Sid, that belongs in the museum . . .

BUT . . .

Provided we get to run again at Bonneville, I'd like to borrow it for the event, after which point it should go to the museum, where it might inspire some other goofball down the road.

Hold on to it for the time being, and THANK YOU!
