Boost Controller for CBGALT
« on: December 01, 2015, 07:46:27 PM »
With all this down time it seemed like a good idea to switch from D/CGALT to D/CBGALT. The D blown record is about 11 mph lower than the naturally aspirated record.

So  with that said, we are down to some small fab work and the pressure tubes for  the Turbo.

My questions:
1.) What boost controller are allowed in CBGALT?
2.) Obviously nothing electronic but can I use a manual knob style boost controller?

First picture is before with carbs and the second is as the car sits today. Its been a fun project.  My stainless welding has improved greatly...my aluminum welding on the thinner sheet  metal  still has a ways to  go. The cold air  tube welds in a word are "ugly" but now that I have figured out the shape to duct air  over  the header and to the driver's head light, I will build another duct with tacks and let Matt weld it pretty.

Like always your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Run a simple manual control & it's unlikely you'll be messing with it during a run, just don't get greedy too early. Let the timing slip make you a bad a$$ not the wheel spin.

Good  advice. I don't want to adjust during a  run.  But I like the idea of sneaking up on the number I would like to run.

Thanks for the input.

When you're all done shifting and sitting there bored  for a couple of miles you might want to bump the boost... make it easy to reach, momentary switch on the wheel would be good, a little harder to make initially but easier and safer than a knob...

PS got the sitting there bored comment from Don Vesco after he made a 300+ run in the Kawi twin Lightning Bolt... well yes he used a knob, but had a lot smaller cockpit.  :-D

Been using a Manual Boost Controller from the day the turbo was installed. Set 2 records at Bonneville and was never questioned during inspection and Teardown.

I would think you could use two or more if you manually switched a valve between them,

Thanks, Also I always learn something from your website. I have been looking for a cost effective throttle position sensor for my RacePak data logger.  I was looking at  your  build log and there it was. Thanks for posting, I'll pick up the sensor from NAPA tomorrow  and build one.
Thanks,

Might want to think about limiting boost in the lower gears, by using two different boost controllers with different settings, (or other method) anda  valve that switches between them as you shift up in gears. One low boost setting until you get up into 3rd gear and then the other in the longer gears when the engine is under full load and the turbo is fully spooled up and you can actually use the extra power.

Maybe a cable controlled mechanical limiter that holds the waste gate partially open in low and second gear.
Some of the more advanced electronic controllers do that to limit wheel spin in drag racing, but you can also do the same thing using only mechanical methods such as valves on the waste gate controller or different waste gate springs or bypass plumbing etc.

Good idea. I will  put some thought as how to accomplish a low gear and high gear  boost setting.
