1st time??
« on: October 02, 2015, 04:35:21 PM »
I have a question for folks who have been doing this for 25 years or more;

Has there ever been a year you can remember where every event was cancelled?

I have been doing this for 9 years now and there was always at least 1 event able to be held each year.

In '82 and '83 the salt was under water pretty much all year. Lot of flooding all over Utah.

I was running with the USFRA at that time. Very small meets. One way. Larry Volk began running them because BLM said that the SCTA wasn't using the area enough to warrant their attention. So the USFRA came into being and they in May and on as conditions allowed. Hofman/Markley group told me that El Mirage was a horrible place and I shouldn't go there. I believed anything they told me. But in '83 I gave up and went south. They were right.

Rich's memory is close to what I recall.

USFRA was formed 25+ yeas ago to show the BLM that we were using the salt flats. I recall that most meets were scheduled as 'test & tune" showing BLM that we were there.
Many of the July events were a rain out. I did not keep track. just went when we could.

It would be very difficult to locate a 1983 Speed Week program. We were a rain out in '82(never left the airport inspection area) and '83(never left Los Angeles).

1984 we were set to run, rain on Saturday night caused us to move the start line down 2 miles leaving a 3 mile track. Rained out in 2.5 days.
