It sounds like the output could use some low-pass filtering to clean it up.

Thanks to everyone for your help, I think we are on the road to a solution.
At least now i know the issue is likely equipment  compatibilty and maybe not my shade tree mechanical approach.
I'll post up results when we next test.

update
BVCBR's post put me in contact with him, Jamie Wagner, at MSD.
I gotta say JAMIE'S TECH SUPPORT IS THE BEST I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED.
Multiple emails have explained why the MSD distributor is outputting a signal which will drive an analog tach just fine, but is almost unusable for Racepak rpm input.  I am down the path of installing a MSD Digital 6AL Ignition Controller which has a tach output with the square wave the Racepak needs.  But also Jamie has provided me with tach signal convertor  8132 which should work on the GM HEI system i am replacing (this is in case i go back to that system)
Some TFA household complications are slowing my controller install & testing, but for the 1st time in 2 years i feel i understand the problem and likely have an answer.
     to be continued...Karl

I'm glad that fixed it up.

By the way, I'm Jamie at Holley now. When Holley bought MSD, they moved me to Kentucky. I can still help out with any MSD issues though.

Jamie,
I will not forget how much you helped me on my tiny little problem.
Lots of sales/techs provide great customer support when 10's of thousands of dollars are in play.
But the guy who also does it when just a couple hundred bux is being spent does it because that's just the kind of person they-YOU are.

If you ever need to look at a setup we have tow cars in town with IQ3 and MSD boxes...

We had a problem similar to yours, tried everything, ended up just getting a new box and worked fine.

James,
Thanks a million for the offer.  Everything seems fine now w/the MSD box, i just went thru a bunch of gyrations getting there.
Are you planning on going to Speed week?
