311+ on a motorcycle, faster than I ever want to try.
« on: September 23, 2015, 02:56:38 AM »
Mr. Bill Warner, attempting a world record that, not too many years ago, people KNEW was impossible-yet, through aerodynamics/electrical advances/horsepower and a never ending "go for it" attitude, Bill made it past 311 MPH.
To all riders, go fast and be safe.

Cool collage picture. Bill was a great guy and there are many folks that miss his presents in the pits and on the track. RIP

Is that a dare, Mike?* Sometimes I do assign a location, sometimes I don't.  I do my best to remain steadfastly cornfusing.

*I could move you instead of Mark -- where'd you like to go?

Which organization sanctioned the "world" record?

DW, None as far as I know. ECTA I'd have to guess.

However, 311 is hauling the mail no matter how you judge it. Bill went 278+ with his "slower bike" in Texas before building this one.

The 311 record run took place at the LTA event at the Loring air base in Maine running the 1.5 mile coarse. Bill also set the mile record in Maine at 296 MPH. And if memory serves me correctly Bill's ECTA record at Maxton is 279 MPH. While these numbers may not be world records they certainly show he was the man. His legacy will live on forever.
I'm proud to say I witnessed all three of the above records.

Working in the shop I use the 'F' word a lot. No not that word these words Focus and Finish go Fast and Flathead Ford!
 ECTA  XF/BGRMR Record 179.8561
LTA    XF/BGRMR  Record 200.921 First  Ever Ford Flathead Roadster to hit 200 MPH burning gasoline July 2018

While I respect Bill and his accomplishments we need to be careful when using the words World Record. There is ONE body that can certify a world motorcycle record and that is the FIM. I do not remember the LTA having FIM certification at their meets.

The above aside, I stand by the the fastest is the fastest no matter what theory.

Bill was sensitive to this issue, and referred to his 311 record as the "world's fastest sit-on" record, but not a "world record".

He went 272 at Maxton, 274 at Mojave, and 278 at Texas. All track records in the mile.

Riders just have to hope that the FIM pick up on the standing mile (or standing 1.5 mile) top speed format.

Not all countries can run 1.5 miles, but the one mile has become an International speed trial format. Bill Warner (RIP) takes the top spots in any list for all of the US Mile Tracks.

If the event organisers have to pay for a steward to attend, the racers may just be content with their 'local' records.

As Bonneville records all seem to have the 'World' tag what is the fastest record in the sit-on class there? (Just a Brit using a spoon to stir!)

I think Al Lamb has the fastest sit on record, around 263 or 264. Greg Watters is in that neighborhood also.

I think you are stirring an empty cup Malcolm, both the web site and the rule book refer to them as "Bonneville" records. The word "world" only comes in with PR hype.

Thanks for confirming that.

Now, if 311 mph is faster than 264 mph, which my maths teacher taught me might be the case, ................. then Bill Warner could be rightly known as the "World Record Holder".  Because there is no one overall governing body for pavement racing but all publish their results on the interweb.

So even if the man himself did not wish to claim such a title I think it fits (until someone goes faster still).

Does the pavement sport want the FIM involved? (or the AMA in the case of the USA??)

He can't hold a record in a book that doesn't exist but he certainly is the "worlds fastest"

All other things aside i am sorry we never saw Bill running on the salt FIM or SCTA with his realy fast bikes

Al would be fastest FIM with Richard Assen next then my 251

Also the list of guys that have run  fast 1 way is not real long, most notable is Joe A's 273 ?? (please correct if not accurate)
