When I was at White Sands years ago, it was just that - sand. It would blow into dunes. It may be white, but that is the only similarity.

Here is some more in on White Sands New Mexico for possible Land Speed Racing???

avantikid........the space shuttle landing strip at White Sands Missile Range is reported to be one of the largest/longest man made flat spots on earth....i believe it is 13 miles long and 1 mile wide.................it is now used as an emergency landing spot for the drones that are used( training)  in the area at Holloman air force base.............i once went to the guy's house that is ( was) manager of the  maintenance of the landing strip....he is a mopar guy with drag/street cars....................do you know how difficult it is JUST to get onto the base(s) now???    i have tried with my connections to see what the possibility would be to  use the facility and have been told that it would take an act of congress to be able to use it!!!!          i live not more than 30 miles from the site and occasionally bump into people that work there ......hear all sorts of stories  about what is going on out there but don't know what to believe????  ..........................wally kohler      1448 sidecar

Thanks Wally for your input, Dave

Thanks Neil for the photo of the runway at White Sands, it sure looks great, but with today security problems I'm afraid they would not approve of our racing there, but we can dream right!

Doing the math the 35000 foot runway is 6.628 miles long good for a short coarse but still lacking a long coarse.  If entry was possible which we know is not. We need to put all our efforts into getting the BSF conditions corrected so  we can one day once again run on the flats.

RR, there has not been 7 miles of salt in a long time.  2011 the end of the long course... 6.5 miles
Mostly dirt down there

Last time I was there in 2009 the long coarse was still 7 miles cars were leaving black tire marks leaving the starting line. The overall deteriation since then is shocking. Can we see good salt again in our lifetime or will our kids see it?

The best Salt I ever saw was 2002 World Finals. White concrete. Dust free.
I was also the only time I have been to the 7 mile mark. (return run)
Potholes make interesting shadows at dawn.

Yes, I want to ride the Salt again.
I'll even STFU if it helps.

Effective Immediately

Please note that as the Media Contact for the Utah Alliance I will no longer monitor or comment on this thread about Bonneville Salt Flats restoration activism.

Any developments and actions taken by the Utah Alliance will be posted on the thread "Utah Alliance" created earlier today AND on the groups new website:

www.save-the-salt.org

Please remember that we are ALL unpaid, passionate activists who need to focus on specific goals.

We will be communicating those goals together with specifics on how individuals can assist in the process.

Wow another copy paste...  :x
Well I guess that kills this thread too :-o
Or not... everyone feel free to continue spreading the word and trying to garner public support to rescue the salt flats from extinction.
Feel free to post your efforts here and on other threads on this subject.
We all need to become passionate activists if we intend to save our salt

I agree with that Stainless. We are in a social media world now so preaching "transparency" should include all media.
There were a number of people at the tour the salt meeting on Monday, including myself, that found it a little strange that the sit down meeting was a "closed meeting". I would have thought an "open meeting but you don't have a voice" would have been a better idea.

Wow A closed door meeting WTF this is not AREA 51 its the BSF what we all are passionate about if anyone should not have been excluded it was certainly you Sid. You took the time to see for yourself and post what you found so we ALL could see first hand how bad the situation is.
So far the save the salt web site has nothing much on it hopefully that will change.  Some people just have to be so important they think they don't need the little guy I'm not surprised.
