Doug's new toy - - 650-A-PG Buell Blast
« on: June 19, 2015, 12:19:56 PM »
My friend Doug in Longmont. CO has given me permission to post a few photos of his new toy.  I met Doug 5 years ago when I needed a piston trimmed and he has since attended all but one of my record runs to the Salt Flats.  Now he has finally decided to join the fray with his own bike, which is ironically in my class when I take off my fairing.  I'm going to try Photobucket for the images.

The first one is just his jig, which he cut all the pieces and sized them on his milling equipment:

I'll post this to see if it is satisfactory.

Full photo of the jig with the first tube in place as well as the bracket that will support his rigid rear.

The front of the jig showing the headstock.

A shot from the rear

First trial of a dummy motor.

Right side rear showing tentative chain alignment.

Rear wheel adjustment by means of Kawasaki eccentric axle in CNC'd carrier.

Rear motor mount uses the original swing arm mounting bolt on the Buell motor.

Close up of that rear axle mounting bracket.

First mounting of the front end which is, I believe, Suzuki.

More photos to follow.

Left side showing front end.  Doug wanted a little more adjustment at the front, so he just whipped us some new upper triple clamps that raised it.

As well, the steering damper.

Front motor mount.  Both front and rear mounts are adjustable about 1/4" in either direction (left or right).

Right side front with the new upper triple clamps.

It finally sees the light of day, although this photo was taken before the new triple clamps and clip-ons were added.

I have left Colorado now so the rest of the build diary will have to wait unless Doug sends me some updates.

See you on the Salt at the BMST.

How much ground clearance did he build into it?

it looks like he's going low profile.

that's a nice build. Very nice frame and killer machine work.

seriously though, it looks pretty low.

salt wheels had 4 inches of ground clearance and that was fine. sw2 has three and I don't care for it. its loading and unloading and getting the scissors Jack underneath the frame. the same goes for getting it up on the bike lift table.

The shop, the frame, those axle plates!!  Everything is top notch! I believe you guys going after my AMA 650 A/PG 133.464mph record.

This picture was taken right after my record run.

I wish Doug and you Tom all the best. Looking forward to see you guys on the salt, Good Luck!

Thanks, Rex,
Doug has been trying to teach me how to run those CNC machines for 5 years.  Now I can change the billets and push the buttons!
How much ground clearance did he build into it?
I believe the target for ground clearance was 3".  The front end sag let him down :-D  Hence the improved triple clamps.

Bill,
I hear you.  My bike has less than 3", but my frame is only 8" wide and the whole bike weighs less than 300 lbs, so I've not had any problems (I can lift the back end up by myself to clear the ramp).

Alp,
You told me that was one of your "soft" records, so naturally that's the one he's after. Unless I take the fairing off my bike and go after it myself.  Remember, you are only borrowing that record!

Looks great. I have been very close two times now to putting a Blast motor in 9216. I think it has potential for a small push rod mill where all of the XB stuff will work.

I pulled into Colorado Wednesday night and spent a couple of days up at Doug's shop helping him put some finishing touches on his bike.  99% finished and nowhere to run. Pictures tell the story better than I can describe.

Finally a photo of yours truly in the rider's seat.
