new land speed club
« on: April 01, 2015, 02:48:32 PM »
I am considering giving a shot at forming the Southern Florida Timing Association to run LSR standing mile events here. I have 2 possible venues. One is the old space shuttle strip up at the Kennedy Space Center and the other is a 2 mile strip that was originally meant to be the SST airport before the idea was abandoned. It is 2 miles long, concrete and in new condition. As I'm a bike guy I would like it to be much like the AMA Bonneville event. However to pay the bills it would probably have to include cars to pay the bills. One great aspect is that events could be run all year long. Like to hear input. Am currently waiting for responses from NASA and the other facility on cost and availability.

There was an event run on an air strip in southern Florida a couple of years back.  As I recall it was a super car event.

Seams like there was some discussion about using the space center. At that time I recall a price of $10,000/day
being quoted.

The super car events were at Miami Collier TNT Airport ... This is the 2 mile strip referred to.  The last event was in 2011.

Talked to Dave Cox at NASA today and they do not allow LSR events or anything of a private nature to be carried out at the facility. The whole facility is going to be handed over to Space Florida shortly and he will forward my inquiry to them as he believes their use rules will be substantially different from that of the government.

Yes!   A LSR event in Florida could mean an event in winter.  Plus, since Maxton moved to Wilmington, that left the SouthEast having to travel a long way to race.

My wife and I both race motorcycles and we live in Florida. We would definitely support it. 8-)

In 2010, I ran the Miami event ("Milemarker 1") on a bike; i've also run all the other aphhalt events.
The Miami surface is unequivocally "the best".
Too bad the organizers ran afoul of Dade County, I loved that place.
