The problem with electronic copies.... uncontrollable.... PDF is changeable.... and one copy could be shared like pictures on the internet.  The books are the best way for the SCTA to control the distribution of the rules.  Join the SCTA or BNI and you get one.  :-D
As for newbie questions, lots of guys seem to be grumpy when they are asked without the poster searching for the answer first... don't be offended...
some of us are grumpy because we are old and don't remember being newbies at the sport

I like the idea of a FAQ U section.... Who wants to write it... and is every answer going to include get a rulebook for the best available information.

Newbies will always ask 'newbie' questions... endless cycle. Embrace the interest of a newcomer and you have a lifelong supporter (financial supporter).

. . . with stacks of old rule books in their garage.  You'll have a few more before your project is done. :-D

Not when the SCTA needs the money to print it to cover the cost of assembling it.

$10 spent to cover the cost of not making mistakes that could be made while assembling a five-figure race vehicle sounds like cheap insurance to me.  It fits the pocket well.  It's easy to show in case of disputes.

Stan, I get it, and I agree that some sort of hard copy publication, the sale of which helps support maintenance of the document, is important.

So until the time that everybody has a rule book, we'll just have to keep answering questions and telling newbies to "Get a Rule Book!"

JUST NOW while posting I had an idea. Jon can start a Wikipedia type of thread, call it FAQ, and people can post into it and fill it up with these questions.

Will that work?
DW

Sounds like a solution to me.

What are the frequently asked questions?  :?

Dirtydutchmen's question is certainly not one I would have included in a FAQ column.

And if a list of FAQ's gets long enough to cover his question, then you're essentially posting the rulebook in a "Jeopardy" format.

Chris,

Here is an idea - you research all the posts on this site and compile all the questions and catalog them for the FAQ U thread. Your car is small so there should not be much work to do.

Dan, I agree - it's a huge task.

The SCTA-BNI website hasn't even attempted it.

It takes a lot of work to keep the Rule Book up to date -- with changes, supplemental new interpretations and clarifications.  And having a separate source of answering questions could rapidly become a source of misinformation.  And who would monitor and update it?

While the idea of a FAQ or Knowledgebase is good, it causes too many problems with maintenance and contributions.

There is a very simple solution, publish the PDF copy. The search function alone is far superior to "key word" searches as used in KB or FAQ due to omission or spelling errors.

Before you start, the "issue" of possibly altering it is simply rectified by adding the following text;
"Record certifications AND Technical inspection will only be legitimized, referenced and or submitted into evidence by SCTA official printed copy"

Been there, done that.

John

PS, could be another possible revenue stream if done properly.

What's so wrong with spending $10 while contemplating building a 5- to 6-figure vehicle?

Make all the copies you want to.

Scan it and produce your own pdfs if you have problems holding a book in your hand and reading it.

Stan,

The scanning into a PDF would negate the search function, which is one of the reasons to have the PDF.

Major companies publish this way. Hell, it makes looking up auto parts real easy if you get the catalog.
For instance, engine bearings, quickly scan 1000's of listings using a dimension.

The book is necessary, no doubt. This would just be another tool in the shop computer.

Publishing the book is a matter of choice.

Guys, the FAQ would be an unofficial, general "dummies guide" to LSR.  It's not like it'd turn into a rogue rule book that people would build their cars to.  Honestly, I've already seen a least a handful of printed magazine articles that pretty clearly describe the classing system.  All it would take is something like this.  A quicky write up on "what class would my car fit into?".  If I had the time I'd draft something up but I don't.  Aren't like half of you guys retired with nothing better to do?   :-D

Retired?    Sort of . . . .

Nothing better to do?    Ahhh, lemme see, where's the work list from the Queen?

Do something about clarifying rules?    I've spent a lifetime "bending" rules . . . . .

This sounds to me like a clear case of: " No good deed goes unpunished."

I need to get back to my beverage sampling . . . . . .
