Fire Retardent materials sources and brand names
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:26:28 PM »
In view of the recent thread about ethanol/fuel fires and the usual spring-summer thrash on cars to get them ready for the new season, I thought I would start a new thread for folks to post links to fire protective materials that they have used or appear to be worth looking into for car builders and shop uses.

I was looking for a fire retardant preparation to apply to a new tent (yeah I know tents are not supposed to go very fast at bonneville) and I found a vendor that has some products which some might find useful..

The have a fabric treatment that can be used to treat most types of fabrics to make them fire retardant.
For the folks running in production classes or the 130-150 club series this might be useful to apply to stock OEM upholstery materials to make it more resistant to ignition and improve self extinguishing behavior if bad things happen.
I have not used it myself but it apparently is widely used in theatrical set construction etc. to improve fire safety and prevent accidental ignition from electrical sparks etc.

They also have a line of fire wall paints and Intumescent paints which resist ignition which might be useful for cars with fiberglass body construction to paint the interior surface of the body panels.

Since half the battle in internet searches is sometime just knowing the right key words to search for looking at these links might also give people clues on other products of interest.

Similar coatings are sold by other vendors such as:

Every year we have questions about fire sleeve and similar products and sometimes it is difficult to find the old threads to look up sources and information, so perhaps listing a few thread links where some of these subjects are already covered in detail would be useful if placed here as well.
