Wheel discs.
« on: January 06, 2015, 06:31:39 AM »
Some of you might have heard that I'm producing a few sets of 15" Carbon wheel discs.

I'm looking for opinions on seating.

I've attached a sketch.

"A" is where I'd like the disc to sit and "B" is where the current discs mount.
I was thinking a flush mount might be better but it has its cons.
I need to cut the plug to size before making a new mold.

I know you guys will weigh in.
Thanks in advance.

Mike,  I like A.  Very similar to the Mariani roadster, though theirs is flat.  Tony

Here's a shot of the Mariani roadster's RR wheel:

Depends on your application. A eliminates a place for dust to sit. B allows for potential pinstriping on the rim.

Put me down as a Mariani-style fan. The problem is that their fit has to be tailored to the sidewall of the tire mfr for both front and rear tires, as far as I can see. We have compared Moon discs and flat discs in the wind tunnel - guess which were less drag?

Were the wheels rotating in the wind tunnel -- or does that matter?

The F1 teams like Ferrari don't spin the disc and use stakes on the disc. Oh and its flat.   Tony

Tony, that makes sense.  Do you have any pix showing how they do this?

Bo, They were very popular from 2007 - 2009 before the FIA banned wheel discs.  I always thought the Ferrari discs with the strakes were interesting.  This page has the Ferrari disc towards the bottom of the page.  http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/wheel_shrouds.html  and another interesting read about the wheel discs  http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4447  Tony

"A" could be trimmed to fit like "B" if the wheels already have mounting tab welded on. "Shims" and longer Dzus fasteners might accomodate them otherwise.

Frank, I need to finish these discs for you and Joe. I feel like an ass for taking soooo
long.

The difference between A and B is about 1/8". That is the thickness of the rim's
material. The way I set up the dummy disc shows that it won't interfere with the tire
and the user would just have to mount his lugs a little closer to the outer side.

I think I'll make the discs to the larger OD and if you need to trim slightly then so be it.

Sounds good to me Mikey! I'm a big fan of option A.

Don't sweat the time frame either Mike. All the wheel discs in the world won't do me much good until ole Hank is running under its own power.

I'm excited to see how they turn out!

Sounds super cool Mike. Amy will love them on her semi-flat black camaro in the Wilmington sun. No hurries from me, you gotta make a living and build a long car. Doing good by the way.
