Where's the love for Pete Aardema's 4 Banger?
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:11:29 PM »
I read this forum every day and I am surprised that as of this date not one person on this forum has commented on Pete Aardema’s Bonneville sheet metal engine that was in the December issue of Hot Rod. The F/Gas class naturally aspirated 3.0 Liter engine was built from scratch. By my count it is only the third engine designed and built for sole purpose for setting speed records. Here is a link if you missed the article.  http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/1412-how-to-build-your-own-sheetmetal-engine/

Well I for one was blown away by it.  It is so out there that it is hard to really comment on.  An unbelievable undertaking and I'll for one be interested in seeing how it does over time,

Several of us discussed it over coffee the other day. It's an amazing project.

Mike, I'll agree that it's lots of money for a goal, but then -- how much do some folks spend to get a red hat?

You could go out & buy a proven dirt midget engine & get the same results but that's not what he's about. He's like many of us in the fact he is testing his own ability & his driving force is not so much the goal but his creativity.
LSR attracts two types of racers, those who love to build $hit & those with big checkbook's who have their crap built. The more active people on this forum seem to be the former because their passion for what they do drives them.
It's like Hot Rodding, there are Hot Rodder's & then there are people that own a Hot Rod.

And many of his projects do quite well. Give him a little more time before you make a decision about the engine.

Lots of money spent to get 388HP.

I would bet that it's a lot less then you think.
