The Kraut Bros. want to buy a lakester!
« on: November 13, 2014, 11:22:47 PM »
Helmut wants a red hat, too - but he doesn't fit into our little punk Acura roadster.
Thus, we need a "Dragster" style lakester (think John Lee, Desert Rattler, Dannenfelzer).
Doesn't need to be complete but current/recent chassis inspection and log book would be nice. Must be large enough to accept Helmut - and a SBC engine.

Bob Brissette has a lakester for sale. PM me if you need his number.

And all the best to Helmut on his quest!

Go out to J & S East Valley Garage [ J & S is just 7 miles from Santa Barbara for those wondering] and see Paul, their Dannenfelzer  lakester is sitting in his garage needs some straightening but there's shops that can do it, one that I know of and a Bville racer here in Fresno.

Yea Dannenfelzer Richards & Madson. Salt was looking for a Dannenfelzer type lakester, DRM might not have rung a bell!!

Wouldn't hurt to hear whats happening directly and get to know a shop involved in Bville racing

Already talked to Freddie. I live just a few miles away from East Valley Garage. Santa Barbara was a hotbed of land speed racing activity for years and years but so many of the pioneers are gone now. Among a few others, Bob Joehnck is still around, he's turning 90 next month. I just had a nice chat with him.

Bob Joehnck got my twin brother and I on the right track in 1956 we were 16 yrs old. We had a street roadster and purchased a large S.C.O.T, blower from Ansen Automotive and we put in Merryman pistons, Engle cam and Bob showed us how to port the heads. Bob made a manifold for 4 Stromberg 97 Carbs and had a machine shop make up a Gilmer drive toothed belt for the blower and Bob welded up headers. All at no charge :-o Most blowers were chain drive at that time. First pass at the Drags 110 mph next meet 120
best time 124. No traction on 6'' tires though.
Bob gave us a great start and a lot of help over the years.

Say hi to Bob from Jimmy and Johnny Langlo.

               JL222

Great story, John. Gotta love that early history when most
people had to make their own stuff to go racing.  I'll say hi to Bob.

Yea making our own stuff. No Gilmer idler pulleys in those days, so to get the right tension we used a piece of wood between the manifold and bottom of blower to space it up :-D
