Steinegger & Eshenbaugh get another record
« on: November 09, 2014, 12:33:49 PM »
The S&E posse just set another world record (their 3rd - they hold 2 prior records at Bonneville) at El Mirage Saturday in their Lucas Oil Products home-built lakester running the innovative "Half-a-Hemi" 150 cid engine in F/FL.  They run one bank of an early 300 cid Hemi Chrysler, normally aspirated, injected...and...of course for S&E...on a whole lot of nitro.

The record was 201 mph and has stood for years.  One the first pass of the day they ran 213 mph.  They will try to up it Sunday.

Ted Olson drove this weekend with Al Eshenbaugh and Jamie Steinegger spinning the wrenches.  They started racing together in '58 in the dragster they built in their garage when they were 18 years old.

I have attached a photo of the lakester in its new wrap (before more Lucas Oil logos went on) and one of the engine.

Well done guys!

On Sunday the car ran 210 mph in increasingly dusty conditions.  That speed is well over the prior record of 201 mph (that the team reset yesterday at 213 mph).

See you all next year...

I remember them running a fast blown fuel dragster at Fontana years ago.

I have an El Mirage record.

I don't consider it a "World Record".

I saw them at Fontana as a kid.

There's only one El Mirage dry lake in the world so your record must be a world record.
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

S&E did run a series of fuel dragsters in the early to mid '60s all over the country.  Some history on the guys can be found at http://cacklefest.com/Steinegger.shtml

They have been regular participants in the California Hot Rod Reunions since the very first one and were honorees in 2010.  The car they still have is shown in the attached photo.

Larry and Al always talked about going LSR racing and finally pulled the trigger several years ago.  The whole team has been having a blast ever since.

They need a long chassis to get enough room to write their names.
