Streamliner rudders?
« on: October 14, 2014, 01:04:22 AM »
I've noticed some streamliners have movable surfaces in the vertical fins like an airplane's rudder.  Some just have fixed vertical fins.  For those that have movable surfaces within the vertical stabilizers, are the "rudders" tied to the steering wheel, or are they adjusted like the trim tabs on an airplane?  Are they adjusted "on the fly" during a run, or pre-set?

Thanks

I don't recall any streamliners with adjustable vertical rudders, a couple have Horizontal  and a  few have experimented with canards for more frontal down force.

Perhaps you've seen a side view of a clamshell-like opening to assist in air braking and parachute release?

Well, I can't figure out how to post an image, so here's a link:

This is the first one I noticed, but since then, I've seen others.  I guess I'll just ask Ron if I see him on Sunday.

Thanks

My guess is that is sending data and if it is retained in the new design I'll bet it could be used to automatically trigger parachutes... Something we have been considering for a long time, to take that half second delay out of the process.
Be sure to let us know Ron's answer

I'm probably not remembering right  but I thought in one of the interviews in BRN that the vertical tab was put there just in case the body influenced the car to go one way or the other but that it hadn't and the vertical was never moved from dead center??????

I'll also await Ron's answer  :-),

I've seen that car up close many, many times, and although I never looked specifically to see if the "rudder" was steerable in any way -- I sure don't remember seeing any kind of a hinge or other device to allow it to move.  Prove me wrong -- I won't be hurt.

Well, by gum -- I guess there is something there.  I stand (or sit)  corrected.  Evidently I just never paid attention to it.

Sum, your correct...the trim tab is mentioned in the Ron Main interview..he said it was installed just in case but never needed.

OK, that is one vehicle. How about all the others the OP inferred?

The new Mariani streamliner appears to have a trim tab on it's vertical stabilizer.
