Well, since you mentioned me, Gregg (or Gary or Graham or Garrulous or whatever you're calling yourself these days), I'll extend my thanks to the many folks that helped all of us here on landracing.com by donating some $$ during World of Speed and the Top Speed Challenge (nee Shootout). It's with those funds that I was able to afford the get a wi-fi hotspot that's our own - not rented from Daypass.com. The rental fee wasn't all that much in the greater scheme of things, but it did/would add up over the racing season. And then there's the hassle of wondering if it got ordered in time for the event, and returning it in time to avoid late charge, etc. That's why I invested. It's Verizon 4G (will default to 3G if it needs to do so). The basic data package is 500Mb/month. but I upped that to 2Gb/month. Because of the failing thing last time out at the salt I wasn't able to get decent data on how much I used out there, but 2 gig outgha be enough to get started. Next level adds 2 more gigs and $10/month - if I buy it ahead of time. If I go over without having already bought more -- it's $15/month for each 2Gb chunk.
Next will be a small computer - probably a laptop. The big tower that we'd used for a while worked - sorta - but didn't really like being carted around. I didn't like being the carter, either, since the dang case weighed about 175# (okay, maybe 40#, but it WAS bulky). And the tower didn't have wi-fi capability so we had to acquire a dongle (still sounds like something from a porno film, doesn't it? By the way, I'm not the aficionado of porno. Gregg is the one that pointed out the word to me. Not that I'm saying he knows the likes of Johnny Wadd and Candy Lips and on and on - but he IS the one that made the connection
) to plug into the tower so it could be wi-fi equipped. One more piece of hardware. We still have the separate AM-FM receiver need, though, since we've been picking up the radio transmissions at the salt. At Wton George (?) gets the audio directly from the broadcast/PA system.
So when next the budget can afford it and you folks convince me that there's enough of an interest to spend the money -- I'll shop for that new laptop that'll cost me less than $300. After the Challenge/WoS I've got enough $$ to keep the website going for a good long time, but I'd like to have enough in the kitty to both keep running and get the new hardware. Thanks again for all of your donations. They're always welcome here at landracing.com. Don't forget to give a listen to the racing from ECTA/Wilmington this coming weekend. And thanks also to Joe Timney & the rest of the Board of Directors at the ECTA for giving us permission to stream their sounds.
