What to do about Forum members that have died?
« on: September 10, 2014, 05:36:32 PM »
Paul Penny reminded me the other day that Ray the Rat's birthday is coming up in a week or so.  So I looked around in his profile -- and don't see a nice and respectful way to indicate that he's no longer with us.

And that brought to mind the issue of lots of other folks that have died while members - how do we/I indicate that they're no longer with us?  I'm going to dig into the SMF (the software behind the Forum) and see if there's something that we can do to add a "death date" or whatever so we can keep the deceased person's account information as a measure of respect.  In the meantime -- got any ideas or comments?

Jon;

In the line "Age" can you change it to read "bbbb to dddd"? Where "b"is the year born (this is already entered in his profile) and "d" is the date of death.

Jon

Is there any way you can change the Age line to read something like: 2-14-45 to 1-1-08?

Like deceased hams are referred to as "silent keys" you could change his location to "final run  February 27, 2014" or some other similar.
Also could make a change in the signature setting so it would appear in all his previous posts.

Change "Position" from the current "New folks" to "Member Emeritus 1999-2014" or something similar (using the actual year they joined).

Thanks for the ideas.  Since those don't currently appear in what SMF has available -- I've got Bob on the case.  Keep coming up with your thoughts.

I think this is a great idea!

Test post from the Web Elf.

hotrod had it right.... I created a membergroup of 'Deceased" and can change the Signature or add to it with a date.  Guess I'll look at this topic and see what changes to make.

If you could just ad the date in place of "New folks" I think it would be perfect.

The 'New Folks' is a group based on post count, and can't be changed individually.  I can add the 'Deceased' group, but that's all.  The only place I can find to put the date or details is in the signature.

Perhaps change the sig line to the "date registered" and the death date?

I have kept a log for SCTA for several years of our lost racers. The list is turned over to Jim Kitchen each  June and posted in the Bonneville Speed Week program.
