Time for an update.

Raced the bike at the Spring Event with zero success. Melted down the front cylinder, ruined the rear head and chewed up the cases. Long story, multiple issues, but thats the short story.

So, needing lots of parts I was at a standstill. I wasnt sure what to do. Fix what was there, start over, go to a Blast motor...I was really not sure. I didnt want to dump more money into it if it was just going to melt down (at the time I didnt know why it melted down)

After sitting on my hands for almost 2 months I decided to find a stock XB motor, be it the 9 or 12. Put a carb and ignition on it and run it. That would get me familiar with the bike, plus it should give theoretical dependability. There is no dyno anywhere near where I live so was reverting to keeping it simple.

In talking to Joe (pretty sure at this point he regrets me having his email and cell number  :-D ) I told him I was looking for a another motor. Instantly he offered up the XB9 he ran in the bike. I thought that was a great idea for about 45 seconds, and then reality set in. I really cant afford to fix what I have, how will fix that one too? (pessimistic by nature)

He said he had a stock XB9 plus a smaller carb. In further conversations he also had the ignition I would need. The ign I used on the 12 didnt have a rev limiter high enough for the 9 motor. A week later the engine was sitting in the shop.

And a couple days later I asked Stacy to help me get 9216 back on the lift. After about a half hour we had the motor in place

Then I attempted to mount the carb, and the adapter to the S&S intake wouldnt fit. Thankfully I work in a machine shop so I was able to build a proper one.  Now some plumbing and general assembly remains.

I have said it 100 times but I cant say thanks enough to Joe. The world needs more Joe Dalys.

As for the bike, I am hoping it runs out ok in July. I would be happy if it runs 125 and comes home running in one piece.

Jesse,
Do you know what caused that kind of devastation?

The race goes on and I'm glad that you will be back in July.  See you then.

Detonation was the piston and head damage. The cases is a long story but my fault for not fixing them right from the get go.

Sorry to hear about you breaking parts Jesse.

Great to see that she's coming back together.

I think we all have a Daly in our lives. :-D

Motor runs, and seems to run well. Coming together pretty good. Waiting on a few little parts to button it all up.

Put the body on today to see what I was missing for parts and how it came on and off. I am thinking of running A one day and APS another.

Do you know what caused the detonation?    An accurate diagnosis will prevent a repeat.

The amount of side electrode projection into the combustion chamber changes the total ignition timing that can be tolerated before detonation.    It changes the effective length of the "spark path".   Substituting spark plugs types between regular gap, retracted gap, and projected nose changes the timing requirement.    Something to think about.

Pretty sure we have narrowed it down to lack of octane and too hot of a plug.

Good, sounds like you are on top of it.
