Wanted; American made jackstands
« on: July 27, 2014, 02:23:03 PM »
My son bought a pair of "professional" grade jack stands from a major department store.  One is bending under the weight of his mighty Ford Ranger pickup.  The stands are made in the Peoples Republic.  He wants to buy some American made ones.  Mine are drednaut ones made in Missouri.  I think they are out of business.  I could not find a site for them in the i-net.

They will be shipped to Camp Pendleton in California.  A donation will be made to landracing .com   Does anybody have a pair they need to get a new home for?

Bo, I've got at least three pair of them at the house -- but don't know for sure where they were made.  I'll look at 'em when I get home and let you know.

These are made in the USA. I have had one for 20 years, someone gave it to me.

I know how seriously the US takes "health and safety".

Don't products need to pass some sort of safety standard before being made available to the public?.

Jacks and the like should. That could have ended very badly Bo. Good thing you guys never had a further problem.

I have a set of Harbor Freight (fine China) 6 ton stands on my service truck that I've been using under semi's & dump trucks for years now, they work just fine for me. The extension section is cast iron so I wont use that under something heavy.

Mike, there is nothing protecting us from buying something inferior.  There are a bunch of manufacturing and testing standards like the military ones and ASTM.  Usually a tool made here works.  The upper part of the jack that should be a forging has me worried.  Some joker could use a casting.

The Hein-Werner stands are made here.  What tonnage rating is best for the average home mechanic?  I was thinking a pair of 3-tons will be OK.

WW,

Yes and No. The 10 ton stands are made in the USA. The 3 ton and 6 ton are **Assembled in the US with US and Global component. Seem like they were bought out by Shinn Fu Company of America, Inc.

Look at their catalog it tells it all. http://www.shinnfuamerica.com/Temp/2353.pdf

Good luck on what you end up getting.

There's a Danish company that makes great jacks and stands as well. AC Hydraulics...acjacks.com
Might be a bit pricing but good quality stuff that can be trusted to last. I've had the DK20 jack for over 10 years and it works as well today as it did the first.

The salesman verified the usjack 3-ton stands are made here.  The upper part is ductile iron.  The price is pretty good so we found what we need.  Thanks for the help.  A donation will go to Slim.
