How Do You Protect a Lexan Windshield
« on: July 03, 2014, 01:20:53 AM »
Have a friend with a 4th Gen Firebird that has a new Lexan Windshield. The car rides on an open trailer and we’re pondering how to protect the windshield from rocks and debris during its ride to Bonneville. Some have suggested taping it up with Blue painters tape, or Green painters tape. What has worked for others?

You do need to protect it, for sure.  Some butter is rubbed in a light coat over the windshield except for within an inch of the edge.  This is done before the tape is put on.  The butter makes the tape easier to remove when we are on the salt.

Skip,
Try an internet search for "windshield tear offs" Looks like about $150 for a two layer with a $40 install kit.

I never did anything to protect mine and never regretted it. I do back the car on the trailer.

you might think about a roll of carpet protector or window mask, both are like  large roll of low sticky scotch tape about 2 feet wide.  I don't think either will leave a lot of residue, we use them to weather wrap the toolbox on the trailer.

One neat thing I saw at Speed Week 2013 was that some teams covered their lexan windshields with saran wrap. That was very easy to peel off right before the run and the car could still be steered with it on. That's not going to protect against big rocks or anything, but for small stuff, dust, and salt it should help out a lot.

6mm High density foam covered by a layer of plastic. Tape the stuff to the windshield surround using duct tape. Done, next????. :-P

Take a look at Wreck Wrap, our bodyman Scott introduced it to us.

It will stick just fine to regular paint too, but it will not stick to our flat paint. Covers the windscreen nicely.

Take a look at this: http://www.uline.com/BL_6408/Glass-Protection-Tape
We use it on glass in picture frames when we ship them. It contains the broken glass in case of breakage.
we use the 12 inch rolls.
