Fred Labello - Anyone remember?
« on: June 28, 2014, 11:25:15 PM »
I was surprised to learn a dog training friend of mine is the niece of Fred Labello.  She was equally surprised to learn I instantly recognized his name!  I can't think of specifics but I know he was a noted land speed racer before the start of the Bonneville Racing News.  He was active in the 1970's?....That is the best we could figure.

He is now 92 years old and I encouraged her to talk to her uncle about sending his photos and numerous trophies on to the LSR museums.  Does anyone know more than I do?  I bet he would love to know he is a noted name in the LSR history.

He had the Ladybug on display at Bonneville during Speedweek in 2012.

It's Lobello

Fred is far from retired in LSR.  He was on the salt last year with a car and I am looking forward to hanging around his pit this year too, if he will let me. A great guy, old friend, and a land racing history (and other hot rodding adventures) that covers more stuff than any amount of space here allows.

His last name is spelled Lobello, and he's a member of the San Diego Roadster Club. Jill Iversen can put you in touch with him. Fred is full of stories...

Apparently Fred's putting a couple of fenders on his lakester and entered this years as a V4F Fuel Streamliner.  Paul Higbee (now there's a name) will be doing the driving.

My  name is Randy Chenowth , in 2011 Jacob Bagnell ,  myself , Mike Bloom , Luis Gick  & others  rebuilt Fred's belly tank & got Fred back it to the salt flats,
I can assure you ,,,,, Freddy knows he is a LSR legend... I have heard most of his stories,,,

I'm the guy that built ( to Fred Specs) the fenders that were put on the back of Fred's belly tank
Because we were short on time ,,, the fenders didn't look to pretty but they worked for  a short time,,, Problem is Fred's design was lacking & we had a hell of a time keeping the fenders on the car,,,, The weld broke on one & we ran it over in 2011 , I personally ripped the other one off the car , in 2012 the new crew welded the fenders back on & the weld broke again,,,, & they ran over the same fender,,,, I HATE THOSE FENDERS... LOL

Here are a few photo of Fred Lobello... The belly tank & the team that got him back to the salt in 2011

Roger that, Michael.  I chatted (email) with Randy a whole bunch of times this event and he did proclaim the relationship.

YES... I'm a Chenowth alright,,,, Related to the dune buggy guy , ( Second Cousins)
But buggies are boring compared to the race cars my dad & uncles built in the 1950's & 1960's
Terry Chenowth , Chuck Chenowth , Roger Sanders
Here are just a few,,,,,,,

I built the fenders for Freds lakester for the 2011 speedweek , I hammered them out of old Ford spare tire covers Fred had in his garage,, They weren't to pretty. but they worked well ,, when they stayed on the car  LOL Someone else welded them on...Had to weld them on again at bonneville 2011 speedweek,, In 2012 after I left the Lobello team,, They fell off the car again while Paul Higbee was driving,,That time Paul actually ran  one over.

Here is a photo of me fabricating one of the fenders

Here are the fenders when I finished them , Pretty basic,,,,
