need crew member
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:19:17 PM »
Hello out there.  I'm building a XXO class Lakester, Blow Gas, 1948 Cadillac engine and trying to make the October Bonneville activities.  It's been a one man effort for the last 2-1/2 years and the car is pretty far along but being 84 years old it's a challenge to make October (hopefully it won't rain this year).

All I can offer is an expense paid trip to Wendover and sure could use another set of hands.  I last ran at Bonneville in 1949 (the first year for SCTA at Bonneville) and this is at the top of my "bucket list" to give it a go again.  I think I stand a pretty good chance of giving Salt Cat a run for their money (241mph) so it should be worth while for someone to give me a hand from an excitement point of view.

I'm in Shoreline Washington, just north of Seattle.  My cell phone is 206 718 2977 and my email is royblixsen@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Roy, I wish the you the very best.  What a story -- raced as one of the '49ers and now, 65 years later, giving it a go again.  I hope to be there in October to see you when you run.  I'm not the guy you want to crew for you -- but I'll sure as heck do whatever I can.  Be safe, have fun, go fast!

Roy:

I am impressed. I wish you the best. I know you will get some real good people that will offer to help you. I know several people helped me that I met on this forum. You seem to be flying under the radar but it sure would be nice to document your runs in October. Some of us 50 something youngsters could probably learn a thing or two we don't know from a guy that was there in 1949. All I have to say is BRAVO. Good luck, go fast and be safe.

He "came out" at the 2014 Bonneville NW Reunion.

Since he survived that experience I am certain someone will give him a hand.

Roy, maybe a little more info....
do you need driving help from the NW or just help when you get to Bonneville?
Should the helper be mechanically inclined, or just a push truck driver...
Got a picture of the car you can show us.

I just posted a link to this thread in the Cobra forum that I belong to.  I know of a bunch of gear heads in your neighborhood.  Hopefully one of them will respond to help out.  They're a bunch of great guys.

I called Roy earlier tonight. I may fly up and met him in Seattle for the road trip. It would be a hell of a vacation and a great introduction to the salt.

Roy, I  sent you an email last night as it was pretty late when I saw the post. I am across the lake in Kirkland and just about finished with my Speed Week prep, give me a holler if you need a hand.

Roy, EVERYONE knows that a Caddy flathead is a poor choice for a B'ville engine, and requires more effort than it's worth!

That being said, I'm off those dates, and can help you if needed. I don't need you to pay my way, so you can save your money for that boat anchor your running! Don't those things weigh like a 1000 lbs????

I'll give you a call later today. I can probably bring another experienced crew member or two along if needed.

Good luck with the lakester- I hope you fulfill your dreams!

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC 1925

Roy, it was great chatting with you this morning! I'm looking forward to meeting you in August, and seeing the car run in October!
