Memorial (Decoration) Day 2014
« on: May 26, 2014, 09:15:15 AM »
If you've got a flag -- it's flying outside the house or the shop today, right?  And why should you fly the flag today?

Because you/we can, without worrying that someone - the dictator, the government, the military, anyone - will come take it - or you - away.

And why are we allowed to fly the flag?  Because many men and women were willing to lay their lives on the line so we could enjoy the freedom to fly the flag.

Our flag is out just about every day.  Is yours out - today, at least?

Thanks, Jon.

I have two flags but they will remain folded in their triangle shape. Those two are too precious to unfold. I guess I should buy one to display outside but all American flags hat I see in the stores are made in China.

I was, with my buddy Jim Lundin, the flag boy when I was in elementary school.  I learned flag etiquette then - including how to fold a flag properly.  I think one of the reasons we both enjoyed the flag duties is that when we saw that it was raining outside we could jump out of our seats, yell "It's raining - we've got to get the flag!" and go racing down the hallways to the door that led to the flagpole.  How fun it was to be allowed to run in the halls.  I haven't forgot much about flying the flag, either.

Neil go to your local VFW. You can buy flags through them, and they are AMERICAN made!
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC 1925

I went to town for a little while a few hours ago and took these photos.  I don't know how well they'll be - I used my 'phone camera.  You'll get the idea, though.  Pete S. is a member of the local American Legion post and a good friend of ours for a bunch of years.  A couple of years ago he came up with a fine way to raise some funds for the Legion.  He "sells" these flags to commemorate service members dead or alive.  It's $50 each, I think he said, and he's now capped the total at 90 flags.  It's 90 because putting them out and into the ground takes his 4-man crew quite a while and he doesn't want to have to increase the size of that troop.

Anyway -- Nancy and I at Kudos Laser make the little nametags that go on each flag pole.  It states the name of the serviceman and his branch of service - and anything else that the sponsor want on the tag (within reason - they're only about 7" x 1").

It's quite a stirring sight to see all of the flags waving in the breeze today.  We'll be able to see them again on the 4th of July.  The city's parade goes down the main street right in front of the park where the flags are flying - so everyone gets a good view of them.

Need a fund raiser for your Legion or VFW or other service "club"?  Get in touch with me and I'll hook you up with Pete.
