It's the Sunday before Memorial Day -- the traditional first day of summer break, right?  And what do you do on the first day of summer?  You go to the beach, of course.  Here are a couple of shots from the shore of Lake Superior about a mile north of downtown Marquette.  Ain't life great?

Hi Jon and Nancy,
Will that ice cool your cocktails? Al Gore says we have 500 days before we all cook and/or drown from the impending flood.
Glad to see "Yoopers" made into the newest Webster's dictionary. About time, eh? Enjoy your summer and see you on the salt.
Go fast, be safe, drive it like you stole it. Love life, your friends and the USA.

Well, Neil, now that you mention it -- Nancy and I are looking forward to the time when the big US cities become unlivable because of heat and drought and places like Texas and Arizona become real (not just virtual) deserts.  We figure that the UP will become a more "temperate" area with global warming happening, and with that -- scads of people will move up here from down below.  They'll all want housing - room on which to live.  What we've done is bought the land on which our house rests -- 60 acres of land.  We figure that although we'll be dead a few years before it's needed, the land can be held and sold or developed by our heirs.  Heck, on 60 acres you can have thousands of resident (see Tokyo, Singapore, Mumbai, and so on).  Our kids and grandkids and so on will be wealthy land owners.  How's that for foresight -- taking care of the offspring?  Some day they'll thank us.

Do you live a double life Slim? If I didn't know better I might think you live in the Pacific Northwest.

As a rule, I try to bring my ice fishing shanty in before tax day.

It's been a brutal one, eh Jon?

Hoping it warms up before Labor Day.

Jon, a short distance to the south is the tropical paradise of Lake Michigan.  It should be sun and bikinis there.

The water in Lake Michigan off of Bradford Beach is at 49 degrees today.

Cooler near the lake - literally, and metaphorically.

And as far as the bikinis are concerned - well - reporting from Wisconsin . . .

Often times, the most exotic thing you'll see on the shores of Lake Michigan are Zebra Mussels and dead Aelwives.

A few days ago, during a 85+ degree spell in the city of Chicago, the beaches were inundated.    Unfortunately, since it was prior to the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend,  NO LIFEGUARDS!     A the 31st or 59th street beach, (so far south that it's almost . . . Indiana . . . .), 2 gentlemen jumped in the 48 degree waters to: cool off . . . .      They more or less immediately became hypothermic, and disappeared beneath the 3/4 foot high waves.     In spite of the almost immediate response from CFD, (under 3 minutes from the call), the CFD divers recovered the men quickly and they were transported to the UC Hospital trauma unit a few blocks away.    They were both doa, inspite of much effort to revive them from the exposure.     Coroner's Report on cause of death: Hypothermic Cardiac Shock.    Doesn't matter how tough you think you are when it's cold enough to stop your heart.
