DYNOTHON 2014
« on: May 19, 2014, 09:53:34 PM »
Welcome to the DYNOTHON, 2014!

Once again, I’m challenging ALL of you to –

A – Join in the fun.
B – Help us raise some funds for this website.

Just like last year, I’m challenging you all to make a commitment to support this site with a donation.  The donation will be based on the BEST HORSEPOWER PULL WE CAN GET OUT OF MY 999 CC, 5 PORT, CARBURETTED, NORMALLY ASPIRATED, 3-MAIN BMC  A-SERIES ENGINE.

Last year, we pulled 95.1 hp out of it on T&T's Superflow dynamometer in Gurnee, Illinois.  So this year, we do have a baseline, rather than just a decent educated guess.

This year's improvements include -

Paul Ivey racing valves, which demonstrated a measurable increase in exhaust flow on the flow bench.

Coated pistons.

A more stable, adjustable timing belt arrangement, replacing the chain drive.  We didn't have time to adjust cam timing last year - this year, we'll see if there is power to be found there.

A new Maniflow all-out race header, comparing it to the Winners Circle unit that helped propel the Pommy Pygmy to 118.693.

A crank scraper and windage tray.

An electric water pump.

A plan that will let me put together a couple of different ignition curves into the brainbox.

A willingness to test a little leaner than last year.

It's my hope we'll see an additional 4.9 hp over last year.  A nice 100 hp figure would be the target, but rest assured, we won't walk away without the best possible number.

I can't yet set a date.  I'm waiting for rod bolts to arrive, and Fordboy has some early June scheduling things to deal with, but I need to push to have this ready to go no later than June 24th.  I'll be finishing up the details necessary to set the appointment, and I will post the date here.

A photograph of the test results will be posted here as proof.

Once again, I'll kick it off with a commitment of $1.00 per horsepower.

No contribution will be considered too small, and if you’d rather not make your generosity public, simply PM Slim the amount you want donate per horsepower, and he’ll maintain your anonymity.

Let’s keep this site financially healthy, and have some fun doing it.

Thank you in advance for your generous participation!

PS - This is the year to participate, because as I start plans for the new DOHC, 4 valve MG/Rover K engine, rest assured, it'll never be cheaper.

For either you OR me . . .

Ante up!

Chris Conrad

Hmmmm . . . Fordboy, how lean can we go and still have a motor for Bonneville?

I'd like to fleece Sparky on this one!

Thanks, Sparky!

I'm not as rich as Sparky but I'll go for $5 per HP.  By what you described for changes, I'm hoping you see 105.

Okay - the die is cast!

I talked with Fordboy this morning, and just got off the phone with Tom at T&T, and the 2nd occasional Dynothon will take place JULY 9 and 10.

Yep, good ole US Greenbacks!  :-D

Paradise is a bit on the chilly side at the moment, well compared to summer anyway!

Your thread is well worth it for the entertainment value alone!

OKAY -

Now that the Aussies and the Americans are out of the World Cup -

DYNOTHON BEGINS WEDNESDAY!

We're shooting for 100 hp on the tractor motor, and Slim needs money to keep this site open.

Some of you have already pledged - thank you - but Wednesday and Thursday, July 9 and 10, we'll be generating the wallet draining numbers (your wallets) that keep this site alive.

Man up - pony up.

Chris

Re: DYNOTHON 2014 - LAST CALL!
« Reply #10 on: July 09, 2014, 12:46:49 AM »
Okay - I THINK I'm good to go . . .

First off - Don - I just got your text.  I've blocked out 2 days for this one, but I'm going to be scrambling on Wednesday - give me a call Wednesday night - you're more than welcome to ride down and join us on Thursday.

Since June 23rd, I have not had a full day off from work.  As a result, on the 5 days when I was only required to work an 8 hour shift, I busted my hump getting the lump ready to go on my off hours.

I don't like to work like this.  I'm a bit keyed up, short slept and irritable.  The thrash is something I prefer to avoid.

Nevertheless, I'm cautiously confident that we're ready to dyno.

The Dodge is loaded, I'm going to recheck the checklist before I nap out, and tomorrow, I'll stop in Wind Lake, pick up a pale of gas and head down to T&T.

So this is the LAST CALL - I know I can count on a number of you to pony up to keep the site going, but to those of you on the fence, this is the time to make a commitment to landracing.com .

In May, I committed to a buck a horse.  I'm raising that to $2.00 and I call.

Are you in, or out?

˙buıʇɐɹʇsnɹɟ pɐʇ ɐ sɐʍ ʇɐɥʇ 'ןןǝʍ

Okay - quick report.

Mark and I arrived at 9, and got right on it.  It was a slow go - had to fabricate a pair of motor mount brackets - the ones we used last year were left in the car - which is at the paint shop.

We set about setting up the ignition, carb, manifold, primed the pump, installed the header, oil temp sender, the whole laundry list.  By 12:30, we took lunch, and got back at it about 1:15.

Mark went about setting up the carb linkage, re jetted the carb to Illinois altitude, and I put together a preliminary advance curve map and downloaded it.

After spilling about a quart of gas from the fuel line - it had been set up for dual carbs on the engine before us - we finally got it started and running by about 3:30.

Mark says he thought it sounded good - we put a load on it and ran it for about 20 minutes to bed the rings in - but we 've got a leak under the front cover.  I pulled the cover, and the cam belt was drenched.

It doesn't leak enough to stop us from testing, but we're heading in early to see if we can get that fixed.  If not, we'll just top it off, dial up what we can, and I'll fix it when we get home.

I checked the valves - a few tightened up on the exhaust on a hot check - about what you'd expect - but everything else was within a thou or so.  I'll redial it in the morning.

No numbers yet.  Stay posted . . .

Mark - pick you up at 7:00.
