The UK Mile and UK 200 mph speed record hats
« on: May 19, 2014, 01:04:00 PM »
Inspite of cross winds the UK Timing Association "UK Mile speed records" meeting held over the weekend was hailed as a great success.  Just need some more cars to attend the next time.

The "UK 200 mph Speed Record Club" recognises these UK Mile records as well as other records set under the governance of the UK or International organisations, with the awarding of a purple hat and certificate.  All UK venues used (land and water) are eligible.  With two bike riders joining at the weekend, the exclusive listing (going back as far as 1955) recognises the 200 mph+ speed records of 16 people.

There is one entry in the 300mph+ division so far, where the purple hat has a gold peak.

Its a purple hat with a gold peak on it!

The only way we can get to 300 mph in the UK is with thrust power, so many on this group will probably now turn away. ..........

Colin Fallows used the jet car "Vampire" to achieve records at over 300 mph in the UK - the timing traps were 1/4 mile and 0.5 kilometre, set out on two different airfileds Elvington at 1.9 mile total length and Fairford and about 2.15 mile.  The speeds are the average speed of two runs within one hour.  [At the end of a teaching day later in 2006 the car was written off by another driver].

A jet car known as Split Second built for Colin and Mark Newby and operated by Colin and driven by Mark has gone quicker in the UK oneway only - Kilometre at 316 mph.

In my lifetime I doubt we willsee a wheeldriven 300 mph record set in the UK - not even on the 3.75 miles of beach at Pendine
