Front tire size pros and cons. Let's hear some feedback.
« on: May 01, 2014, 10:26:01 AM »
So as far as front tires go, what insight do you guys have as far as size?

Do you want to totally fill the wheel well if possible?

Does a smaller tire have more rolling resistance?

Drag?

If we are building the suspension around the tire and we won't need the small tire to get the car really low, I assume bigger is better for less rolling resistance and filling the wheel well...

Is this for the Firebird?

You have an advantage in fabricating the whole thing.  I had to work around stock A-arms, and in order to get the extra drop, I had to have the spindles and hubs turned, remove the front brakes, and roll the inside lip of the fenders.

I'd go as tall as practical.  Less heat build-up with the weight and forces spread out over a larger area.  Determine you clearance under the fenderwells at the height you want to run, allow for adequate steering clearance, and put the tire there.

Well, I guess we're making a LOT of progress . . .

Yes for the bird..    Pretty much you are in line with what I have been thinking.

Yep, run the tallest tire you can unless it becomes an aerodynamic problem.

Fill the wheel well as much as you can (and perhaps tighten up the wheel to inner fender if the rules allow). The space not occupied by the tire/wheel is adding lift and drag. Also, get as flush to the outer sheet metal as you can. Easy to do in the rear with spacers, harder in the front as you have to keep your scrub correct.

Look at current Cup wheelwell openings and see how much of their shape you can use legally. Especially the Daytona/Talladega bodies. Also look at the Mariani roadster (the new '34) and see how Troy T. used the wheel covers to eliminate the "inny" between the tire mounting flange and the widest part of the sidewall of the tire...
