On the REALLY high speed runs why don't the tires explode? There are guys who have hit 300+ and 400+ MPH, why don't their tires explode?

Is this a trick question? I'll answer it as though it isn't. The tires don't explode on high speed passes because they are rated for those speeds.

Street tires would fail at far lower speeds than that. The SCTA has strict regulations concerning which tires must be used at above certain speeds. At the speeds you mentioned, the tires are specially designed & built to withstand these really high speeds.

Because the tire belt is stronger than the centrifugal "fat belly" trying to breakout  :-D

The cord structure offers a much greater resistance to centrifugal force than that of a standard tire and there is virtually no rubber on the tread area so that the tread can resist the force.

M/T and Goodyear manufacture tyres for speeds in excess of 450.
Maybe not in all sizes but 18 x 6 (M/T) and 15 x 4.5(Goodyear).

I just ordered a pair of 30.0X9.0-18 's from Mickey Thompson. Rated at 560 mph. [About $3/mph] You have to call them direct and they will put you in contact with "The Man". After you sign a release form you can place an order. Actually works pretty smooth, but may take a little time so don't wait until the last minute.

I can e-mail the catalog section to anybody who wants to read it. I can't print it here because of it's size. It gives the specs and ratings.     Doug
