Shorai battery size?
« on: April 27, 2014, 10:03:16 AM »
I'm planning to use a 12v Shorai battery to power my bike's water pump, digital exhaust temp. gauge and possibly a digital tach. It will be a total loss system. The little pump uses 1.7 amps.
Assuming I run it 20 times for 5 minutes, what battery rating do you figure I'll need?

assuming the others bring the total draw to 2 amps

20 x 5 = 100 minutes = 1.67 hours

2*1.67 = 3.34 amp hour rating

That will allow you to draw 2 amps over 1.67 hours at which point the battery should reach the point of needing to be recharged (~10.5v). Knowing that batteries tend to lose some of their gusto after being charged over an over again, I would double that at least. You can pick up some nice 12v 10 ah batteries for cheap.

Bring a charger... the salt will help drain your battery power, you can always find some power if you don't bring some.  Small HF generators can be had for a $100 or less.  Put the largest battery on the bike that you have room for.

IF you plan on using a Shorai battery (we were sponsored by Shoria on our LSR sidecar) they are truly outstanding (not cheap to buy) when fully charged they will last a very long time......we were running the engine, fuel pump, electric shifter, on total loss........we ran the whole week without a charge at the BUB event, with 2 runs a day..........they will not loose a charge when sitting parked.......our sidecar is going to the National Motorcycle Museum and has been sitting in the shop for the last 10 months......10 months ago after the last run, I charged it up....it showed 13 volts when charged..............today it showed 13 volts.
However, it should be noted that it is best to use their special charger............................no low price battery....but certainly a outstanding product.................................................................................

I'm not familiar with a Shorai battery but if it is an AGM type, I wouldn't recommend using an ordinary battery charger on it. AGMs are somewhat different and can be damaged by incorrect charging.
