Just for fun and some light reading, here's a blog I did and some photos of Larry's Old Volks Ghia from 2009.

Awesome to see another Ghia being built for land speed racing.  Hope to see this out at B'ville next week!

Here's an article in the 2010 SpeedWeek Program about the late Larry Monreal.

Larry's car was sold to the Gasser Garage in the UK -- The dedicated group of guys there have bought, thru the years, a lot of the old VW drag racing gassers and restored them to their former glory and then sold them to appreciating VW fans in Europe. And I'm sure with the racing history of Larry's car and the renewed interest of LSR in Europe, we can expect nothing less from these guys for this car......

As Speedweek was getting closer and I kept finding things in the rule book that either had to be done or added I came to the realization that I would be looking at a finish date closer to World of Speed.  So instead of rushing I have been trying to take my time and go through the rule book multiple times making sure each area is covered. Still lots of little things to finish up and a few big things still, but it's getting closer.

I haven't been on in a bit.  I think i'm on the home stretch now though.  Here are some pics from the last few weeks.

All of the lexan/polycarbonate is in and done.

Here is when I was mocking up the turbo and carburetor.  I'll try to get some more current pictures this next week.

After a much needed bath. Installed the windshield and ended up with a crack, so I'll be on the lookout first thing Monday morning.

Very sharp looking car!

The details (cal look window rubber with lexan windows, polished headlight covers, super clean cage work and dash) really set it apart and above.

World of Speed 2015?

Thanks for the compliment Steve. I've used your Rampage as a standard to try and meet in quality and creativity. If it turns out half as nice I'll be happy.

I don't know if you are set for wheels and tires yet. But, I talked to Greg today about these:

Goodyear front runners on aluminum wheels

He sounds like a nice guy, brought his Ghia to Bonneville in 2011, and has since sold it. I thought I could use the tires, but they are going to be too big.

Well its been a while since I've posted in here, but I thought I would update everyone that was following along.  After the cancellations the last few years I haven't been doing much with the car.  A few weeks before Speedweek I decided to read through the rule book one more time.  I found that I needed a few things.  I had to build another motor mount.  I was also having problems with the turbo oiling on the 1500cc.  About 3 days before we left I decided to ditch the turbo and go with the 1800cc engine I built a few years ago in our off road car a VW Thing.  I got most of the switch done and we packed up and headed across Nevada to Bonneville.  We got there mid day on Saturday and got pits setup, and worked on oil lines and fuel lines.

We went to rookie orientation and tech inspection on Sunday morning.  There was a few things we needed to change.  We got some aluminum tape from another team and Dave from My Three Sons Racing made me up some window brackets to support my rear quarter windows.  We had the car through tech on Sunday aternoon.  On Monday morning I adjusted the valves and carburetors and we headed to get in line.  On the rookie run I ran through the gears and cruised through the 2 mile marker.  98 mph.  I decided to go again and wanted to break 100 mph.  106.4 was what the timing slip read and we headed to impound for an open record in G/CFALT.  On Tuesday we headed to impound and picked up the car at 6am.  We warmed up the engine and headed over to the rookie course.  We backed up our run with a 106.8.  The average of 106.643 mph was a new record.  The car handled great and the engine held it together.  Overall a great trip.
