Total Mileage at Bonneville
« on: April 23, 2014, 02:09:58 AM »
I was talking to Garry Banta the other day and we discussed the 737 car Marshall, Thayer, Van Dorn, and Banta  I have known Verlin and Garry for lots of years. Garry told me that the car, with various owners ran Bonneville every year from 1949 until 2004, when Verlin passed away just prior to World Finals, with the exception of 3 years.  He had also gone through the log book and totaled up the mileage at Bonneville alone and it was over 7500 miles!  That got me to wondering if an car had logged more miles?  Any one out there know of more miles run?  Sadly, the car is sitting and there are no plans to ever run the car again.  I hear rumors of it going to the NHRA museum some time for display but nothing solid.

Well -- show that photo to Joyce Jensen and see if she remembers when Jim was shaped like he is there.  More unusual -- he's not wearing white trousers.  My, how times change.

As for mileage -- I don't know how many miles we run in any particular year - or event.  Does the mileage (7,500) include trips from the finish back to the pits and from pits to start -- or is the total just from the 0 to the 5?

If you go back to the endurance racers and international records, running 24 hour and 12 hour events, that's where you'll likely find something.

The EX 179 MG, which later went on to run under both the Healey and BMC monikers might have exceeded that - but probably not by much.

I knew that, Dan.  My finger must have suffered a brain fart.  I've since corrected my typo.  Thanks.

Slim, the 7500 miles are all on course, on the throttle.  I was just curious to find out if anyone has more miles than that at B'ville.  Garry was quite surprised when he realized the mileage too.

Is the assumption that all runs went the full five miles. How runs per day were used in the calculation?

Are we sure that all of the 52 runs were for 5 miles? I know blown fuel Chryslers sometimes don't make all 5.

I've been putting on over 120 miles a day in the "Stupid Car" and now the "Salt Truck" picking up trash and keeping the outhouses clean. We've been doing this since 1998. Not as much fun as the racers!

I'm not sure of anything, I was just playing with the calculator.

Just under 29 five mile runs per year for 52 years.

 I suspect there's a mistaken extra 0 in there 750 miles instead of 7500.

  29 5 mile runs per year? x 52 years = 1508 runs

  2.9 runs per year x 52 = 150.8 runs

   Still 52 years :-o

There were not any short lines 38 years ago...No one was in the pits and most all between run maintenance was done in line. As I remember it the after record runs (2 way) my wait was usually 4 hours.

However something strange would happen at about 6pm..... but between starts on the single course went from about 3-5 minutes to about 30 seconds...HMMMMMMM...JD
