Fire Sleeve Sizing
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:27:09 AM »
How do I decide which size fire sleeves to purchase? The fuel line that I am using is approximately 3/4" outside diameter. Would I buy AE102-12 (3/4"), or should I get slightly larger sleeving, like AE102-14 (7/8")?

Also, do the clamps tighten over the fire sleeve as well as the hose, to make the seal? I assume the sleeve covers the entire line, so I would have to remove the existing band clamps on the hose, to put the sleeve in place, then clamp over the fire sleeve, squeezing the sleeve and the hose on to the fuel fitting together. Does this sound correct?

Thanks! I'm trying to get my '01 Hayabusa ready for the BUB Speed Trials, and want to make sure I'm safe, plus pass tech inspection. :-)

Get the size that will fit over your hose fittings. Fire sleeve ends can be dipped or painted with sealant like red rtv to keep the fibers from coming out. Just lightly clamp it with SS pull clamps. It does not clamp over to seal the fittings.

Okay. Thanks for the clarification!

So the inside of the sleeve looks like soft, fibrous material. With some "give". I'll have to size the sleeve large enough to go around both the hose, and the clamps/fittings.

I may go for stepless ear clamps, for a lower profile. Right now the hoses are on with a mix of ear clamps and worm clamps. The worm clamps seem like they'd be too large, if the sleeve needs to go over it.

I just wish I'd figured this out before I put the fuel system together. Now it all has to come apart, get sleeved, go back together, and please, please not leak! :-o

Just put a few turns of safety wire around the fire sleeve on each end to hold it in place.

That sounds easy enough. Whatever will meet the requirements...

2.E. - http://www.speedtrialsbybub.com/2014_event/AMA-BUB-SR-2014-v2.pdf
"Aero/quip or equipment fire sleeve shall be securely fastened using metallic clamping devices over all gas/fuel lines and connectors."

I'm also wondering if velcro fire sleeve would be acceptable? It's more expensive, but it would save me from having to remove and re-install the fuel lines.

Guess this is a rule question, for another forum. But in terms of safety, you'd think it'd be just as safe. The velcro is protected by the fireproof wrap.

the fire sleeve should cover the rubber, woven or SS portion of the hose vulnerable to flame exposure up to the aluminum part of the fitting be it a push on barb style or reusable AN. I would not clamp the fire sleeve with the hose. the fire sleeve should go over the hose and clamp. We use some stainless steel zip ties we found at Lowes to synch the fire sleeve down over the hose and clamp. With that said the sleeve needs to be large enough to slide over the clamp. We have used a larger diameter on the ends and slide it over the hose fire sleeve to accommodate the clamp with out have a big baggy fire sleeve. All this is before I tried the silver sleeve with the Velcro strips, not that is all we use so we can quickly service, clean the hose and check for damage. Its more expensive but sure makes working in a thrash a lot faster.

my 2 cents.

If you don't have a supplier or a good deal for fire sleeve, here is a shameless plug, we can get you DEI fire sleeve and insulation products at a decent price at parklandautosport.com. Just PM me with any part numbers and lengths and I will let you know.

Here are two pictures of mil-spec AN braided hose with sleeving installed. Judging from the tightness of the sleeve it was probably installed over the hose before a fitting was installed on one end. The first is a Stratoflex hose with fire sleeve; the second is a sleeve that I do not recognize. My guess is that it is an abrasion-resistant sleeve rather than one that is fire-resistant.

This fire sleeve assembly is OK with the US Air Force so I think it should be OK with the SCTA, etc.

Thanks! That gives me a much better idea of how to install this stuff.
