That was pretty cool video! Thanks for giving us an up-to-the-minute view of salt flats. Tell us what equipment you used to get the video.

It was shot with a quad-copter.  It was pretty breezy and thus the instability you see in the video.  What I thought was interesting was where the water had accumulated and the "dry" areas.  You can see pretty far down the course once elevation was hit.

Nice off-season view of the salt.  Thanks for sharing.

And I love that ElMo clip.  Talk about a "period piece", it's outstanding.

Just out of interest, and I can't do this myself coming from the UK, but are there restrictions on using these sorts of gadgets during the racing?  Even a view from behind the public lines would be impressive and give a good perspective on the speeds being run.

Gotta ask permission from the FAA:  http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/03/washington-nationals-face-faa-penalty-for-using-drone-to-take-promo-pictures/  :-D :-o

Actually on reading that article, you DON'T gotta ask permission from the FAA. FAA has no rules preventing their use, and the NTSB upheld that there are no rules.
I think the drones are a valuable video tool and I hope the FAA ignores them as they should.

I know next to nothing about drones nor aircraft -- and now I'll probably prove it.

It seems to me that if an airplane can suck in a bird and be disabled, the same could be said for sucking a drone.  And I'd hate to run over one that stalled and fell while I'm doing 200 and it's trying to get a real neat shot.

That said, I spent a day at SpeedWeek last year helping a documentary crew whose drone-driver and photographer were getting some sensational images.

I believe there is no restriction on their use except a 400' maximum altitude if their use is recreational and not for hire.
