Regarding full payment up-front for Speed Week rooms.

I'll tell you when it will get ugly. When we have a Speed Week that will have to be cancelled due to weather or salt conditions. Hundreds of rooms that were paid for and not used. The sh.t is really going to hit the fan. If all of us would band together and file suits in small claims courts, or be a party to class action lawsuit, the casino's won't ever use this practice again.

I think the hotels have the gouging part covered by that card you see on the back of the door that lists their maximum rate.  As for special event rates, it is pretty much the same whether you are talking about the Daytona 500, Speed Week, Sturgis, or even a ski trip at Christmas.  If you book and pay for it, you are strictly at the hotel's mercy to cancel or refund your money.  As long as the places at Wendover have more customers and than rooms, they will continue to charge what they want.  Sadly there probably isn't enough demand the rest of the year to justify a bunch of Comfort Inns or Holiday Inn Expresses to be built out there.  Class actions only seem to benefit the lawyers who put them together, the rest of us would probably only get a voucher for a meal at a casino buffet.  Small claims might be a possibility, but I am guessing the language in the agreement would get the hotels out of it.

Jeez, you don't suppose a Nevada lawyer would put the squeeze on us suing a casino do you? He might end up sleeping with the fish's in Lake Tahoe if he didn't.

We've just booked rooms at the Montego. Smoking (all that was available) 2 kings in the room - $1600 NZD for Thurs night to Tues night. At least we know we've got a bed. Last time I was there the tent at "the bend" got blown away !! The "resort" fee also grates as anyone else supplies that as part of the room rate!! Never mind, in the overall scheme of things, it's just part of the deal. Wouldn't be the same, not getting screwed by the casinos.
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs....it's quite possible you haven't grasped the situation

Well - for those of us that  spend US $ -- that $1600 NZ converts to something around $1375 US.  Not a big deal, but maybe -- just maybe -- someone on this side of the world would have had a heart attack seeing that amount.  Now he'd just have a heart seizure.

These "resort fees" are the latest scams.  They're not included in the advertised fares, but must be paid.  We found this out in a recent road trip as we were coming thru Vegas mid-week and searched a "deal".  Found the Rio for $29/night, reserved it, and then paid a $25 daily resort fee.  Still a good deal.  Better than the Wendover SpeedWeek rates.

I've got to agree that the $200+ rates are extreme, but for a "vacation spot", they're maybe average.  Still can't see the ocean from the rooms.  And the cancellation fees -- that's the biggest (non)crime!

I got a room in Wells, NV for I believe about $275 for 7 days during Speedweek.  It seems like I can live with the 60 mile trip to save $1000+

By the way, what is the common way hotel rooms are operated - I have already paid for the room, card charged, etc.  I will probably not make it there until the 3rd or 4th day of my paid reservation.  Do I still get my room, if I do not check in on the first day of my reservation?  I'm still happy to pay for the full 7 days as long as I can can check in whenever.

I think I'd tell them that the day you're supposed to check in.  And the next day.  And check to see if the covers are mussed when you check in.  Wells has a one-hour industry going on that you may not want to be a part of.

Isn't that the reason you go to Wells?

They probably have different policy's so best to check but last year we were suppose to check in at the Red Garter on Thursday night.  Thursday we were still working on the car at my place so called and they moved us to Friday.  Friday, still working on car so they moved us to Sat.  Sat still working buy able to leave that night and get to Price, UT so Red Garter moved us to a Sunday start.  I'm sure they still rented the room Thur-Fri-Sat  :-D but we didn't pay those nights.

Like John said above once there we were able to cancel with a 1 days notice the remainder of the nights and Maria said that would hold true this year also.  I don't know if they had the 1 week cancel last year or not.  I'm wondering if for some reason the event was canceled you could pay the first night and then cancel the remainder nights or roll them over to World of Speed or World Finals.  I didn't ask,

Sum

I've stayed at the Bonneville Motel for about the past 10 years but during last year the Pakistani's bought it and threw out all the reservations made last year. Now I have no room. I've called all over town and everything is booked. I hope one of my racing friends has an extra room they can give up this year otherwise I guess Cam, Jessi and I are sleeping under a bridge this year.
