What have you done to your car during the off season?
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:16:20 PM »
Did you just do routine maintenance/rebuilds to your car/truck/bike or did you step things up a notch or is the changes top secretes?
It has been a lousy winter pretty much all over the country but it's time to start thinking about warmer weather, sunshine and going faster!
I for one found out why with approximately 75 more HP in September than I ever had I ran almost 5 MPH slower than I did in April and we had wind in April also.

in my mind, I have stroked it to 79cid from 74 cid. OS ti valves and some nice headwork, upgraded the pistons, bored out the throttle body, installed roller rockers, solid lifters and a new set of pushrods. as well as get a real good adaptable tune in it.

reality, I work to much and cant find my race trailer with the bike with all this snow.

but this is the goal for 2015!
who would have guessed it would take so long to go so fast for such a short time?

I can just imagine how much of a hindrance the weather in the N.E. and west of you has been with one heavy snowfall after another and bitter cold temps. I guess if you watch the news you saw what two 4"-7" snows a 1/4" of ice and temps of 0 to 12 degrees did to us here in the sunny south but we are getting a break this week with 70 degrees and clear sky's,
I get my new custom torque converter in the 1st of next week then back to the tuner for a touch up.

the weather is crippling.

I work STORM restoration, so I see it from all angles.

ill go threw 100lbs of propane in a weekend when the temp goes down to 30deg, double that when its single digits.

forget about getting anything out of the garage or shed with 20+ inches of snow.

anyways, you cant beat mother nature, but I Shure would like to punch her right in the baby maker sometimes.

p.s. I believe snow is kinfolk to that awful Wilmington headwind!

The best thing I did for my little truck was to keep it warm and cozy inside the garage all winter long.

She's hoping that the current wave of warm weather holds up through the weekend, so she can get outside and fire up her engine.

For me is has been two off seasons. But since fall, new step headers and 3" oval exhaust getting the exhaust out the back. Two new front runners, 4 new wheels. New batteries, and wiring. Removed decals and had some smaller numbers made instead of the big numbers on the doors.

I have never ran all the events the heat and my heart prohibit me from running the summer meets but is there always wind and is it always a headwind?
I would love to get one run in May with the +75 HP I have and a new custom built torque converter being installed on Monday and get a true base line on what the truck will do,I have improved by 11+ MPH what I ran my first time out at Maxton so I have it headed in the correct direction so to speak.
High temp today and tomorrow 66&68, next Thursday and Friday low of 18& 21 in the AM!!!

running in the production pushrod bike class, the headwind is my biggest enemy. I can almost just add the headwind to my MPH and be real close to my best speed of 144.511MPH. done with a very nice tailwind], so most times the bike in its completely OEM state is in the mid to high, 130's. we did get to 140+ with the help of a Drummer modified exhaust muffler [thanks Kevin]

however this does not stop me from going, has taught me the importance of rider position, and consistent riding styles.

this season we will put a nice tune in it and do some data gathering, I'm only going to make the 1st 2 events, in 2014, while I build bike number 2 for 2015. as well as get the needed parts to bring bike 1 to its maximum potential, for the same season

back to your question, yes the headwind is almost always there, but some impressive speeds and many records have been posted with the Wilmington headwind. I wouldn't let it stop me from coming out to race.

I will be there and should reset three of the four records I have established there. I should have ran 7-8 miles faster last Sept. even with the headwind because that was when I had the +75 HP I spoke of earlier. I had already ran almost 5MPH faster earlier this year with a stronger wind but I found out after getting home I had a bad torque converter.
I was afraid there was always a wrong way wind though, thanks.

Well I just started on my off season stuff today.   Adding another additional intercooler is my biggest change.  Not sure where I am going to put it yet though....
