DVD of Art Arfons at the salt -- "Challenge"
« on: February 14, 2014, 02:03:34 PM »
A year or so ago Doug (BuickGuy here) got in touch with me to tell of a 16 mm movie that was for sale on eBay.  He and I pooled our money and bought it for this website, and I've got some copies to use as "premiums" for donations to the site.  Off the top of my head I don't remember the date of the film so will have to check it out when I get through the snow and back to the house.  There were only two wheels at the rear of the car, though. . .  I'm pretty sure this one predates the video that Sam Hawley has posted here.

Good footage of the car, Art, Joe Petrali, and on and on.  If you'd like to add this film/video to your collection of salt flats stuff all you need to do is make a donation to this site - at a minimum of $30 plus another 5 or so for USPS Priority shipping.  Use the Paypal buttons on the site, and make sure you give me a mailing address to send the DVD.

PS  Maybe Doug will chime in with comments about the half-hour-long film.  I sent him his copy recently -- I think it'll have got to him already.  Tell us about it, hey?

   Jon,
It got here yesterday and now when Barb gets home from work I'll get her to turn on that electrical/digital device so I can watch it. If I do it it takes her about a half hour to straighten out what I messed up. You know how that goes. Thanks, Jon

OK, I watched the video without Barb's permission and didn't screw anything up. She'll never know I was in there. I hate to use a worn out phrase but this is a must have for any body that loves Bonneville history. Very well done considering it's age. Glad we saved it from some private collection and got it out here where the racers can share in the history. I hope everybody gets a copy and supports Jon and the site. When I found it I thought it was going to be old miscellaneous film clips but it's the whole thing done in a sort of 60's newsreel format. Thanks again, Jon for making it happen.

Met one of your neighbors from Houghton the other day here in AZ.

Just made my donation. Please send the Arfons DVD to my AZ address.

Thanks,

And the best part is the APU that they started it with is powered by a Buick nailhead.

...as were the SR-71's (with a 2x4 manifold & carbs, and headers).
According to the sign board next to the one at the Museum in Seattle the pilots would often complain about the "noisy" 425 cu. in. "race" motors!

Jon,
Thanks for taking advantage of this opportunity.  I just finished a book called "Man against the Salt"  by Harvey Shapiro.  It covers the jet and rocket cars and gives Art his due.  Art is certainly to be admired for his ability and drive to go fast.  I look forward to the DVD.  I'll PM you my address.
