Certified clear fuel line
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:31:10 PM »
Does anyone have a link to a supplier of "certified fuel line for motorcycles"?
Having a problem of identification from web sites.

Any and all help appreciated.

If you are thinking about fuel lines for virtually all LSR events such as SCTA and BUB, there can be no clear fuel lines. All lines have to be fireproof/fire-sleeved and that precludes anything clear.
When you say "Certified fuel lines" the question is who certifies them and what is the need for certification? Can you give more details?

Ref: section 7, page 114, Par. 7.B.25, second paragraph.

We're thinking SCTA

"Plastic lines are not permitted , except clear fuel lines, clearly marked on the fuel line by manufacturer as for fuel application."

Certified by.....manufacturer.
Need for certification.....the book doesn't say!

Maybe someone up to speed on the SCTA rule book can clarify. But as you quoted it, it means PLASTIC fuel lines are acceptable AS LONG AS they are clear and certified. My take on this is that since it is not explained as to what the certifying body is it is up to you to determine if they are "certified" or not.

If you do not NEED clear fuel lines I would not take a chance and use any plastic lines. I still would fire-sleeve them just to make the inspectors happy.
As for certified lines, the MIL-H 6000 lines are certified by government specs, but they are still crappy hose and fall apart if you use any ethanol in them.

Where they don't have to be certified, I've always used Tygon tubing on gravity feed fuel lines.  It seems to last for years even with leaded fuel.  I don't know about alcohol.  But with the new regulations for fireproof lines, I doubt if you're going to find one.

The interesting thing I found out about the common fire sleeve (orange type sold on eBay) is that the covering is not fuel proof.  The orange covering seems to melt or soften in gasoline.  I'm wondering if it's actually been proven to really be much of a benefit in a fire situation?  I'm not inclined to test it myself.

No such thing as fireproof fuel lines.... what you get with any type line covered with firesleeve is fire resistance... you are buying time.  I have not noticed our firesleeve ever have a problem with fuel or oil... don't leave the ends open to soak...  clamp them
Check you are using the real stuff, not an imitation from you know where

Tom;

Tygon makes at least six different types of plastic tubing. I only know one that is recommended for gasoline.

OK, I am on the hunt for clear fuel hose that is marked appropriately "for fuel". Any definitive sources out there?

Thanks

Finding one that is actually marked "for fuel" is the hard part.

McMaster Carr - http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-fuel-and-lubricant-yellow-pvc-tubing/=wuo7bx

I don't know if it has Fuel Safe printed on the hose. If not, a sales receipt and the spec sheet from the website "should" make it legal to run.

I have used it on several off road bikes, but never tried it at an SCTA event.

Look at their "all fuel" line, it's blue not clear but impressive specs.

Maybe 4 Barrel Mike will fix this so you can just click on the link.

Perfect ^^^!  I called the guys at Helix and got the whole run down. Super nice guys and their clear/marked fuel hose is available at Dennis Kirk and other places.  Search for 140-5003 3ft Helix  and they will come up.  Available in 1/4" ID only for now, but that works for me!
