Doug Nash 5 speed w/ shifter

Helping a good friend get rid of some parts. Long story short, we are making an old drag car streetable and the 5 speed trans is being swapped out for an automatic.

This is an older model doug nash 5 speed. Not sure of the exact date, but the car was raced through the mid seventies, and supposedly parked shortly there after. It seems to shift in and out of all gears well, but I have not tore it apart. It did have oil in it, and the car was kept inside so the internals should be ok. It comes with a Mr. Gasket vertical gate shifter that is nice and tight and seems to work very well. Only problem that I know of is upon removal we found the front bearing support was broken where the throw out bearing rides, which is shown in the pictures. I've only had one vertical-gate shifter (ages ago!)- a DragFast on a 3--speed. I'm curious what vertical-gate shift pattern could work for a 4- or 5-speed?

Jack, I'm not very familiar with these type of shifters. However this one appears to work in the following order. Pull the handle up and back 1st. Forward with the handle up is reverse. Once your in 1st, it's just a matter of back and forth till ya run out of gears.

I have a  Long shifter on my Richmond 5 speed which is same as the doug nash. You pull up on the finger ring _or if you have the pistol grip squeeze the handle to move things up to put it in first. On mine up and forward is 1st> Then as above just back and forth. Reverse is on the 5th lever so that is with the finger ring down or handle released so the mechanism is all way at the bottom and then back.  Works well for me so far.

And they say (I sort of agree) if you are driving a lot (street) you will get very strong finger pulling that lever up.  If I were to do over would get pistol grip. The arthritis in my fingers getting to me. Not sure on yours but the Long shifter can be converted.

With a vertigate you have to shift fast. It is spring loaded to come up to the next level with a ramp to guide it. If you shift fairly slowly from 1st to 2nd,as I did while licensing the preloaded mechanism will move to the top, 3rd and 4th, and you will shift from 1st directly to 4th. Learned my lesson, just shift harder even if not needed.

Agree. A really lazy shift will skip a gear. But who is shifting lazy here anyway?

Yes, I know that Al isn't racing these days and Carl is dead, but still -- they were both known for their "relaxed" shifting on the long course.

I know. Actually lot do (lazy shift) and for good reason. hard shifts mean spinning wheels and the results there of. I was sorta tongue in cheek. So, on pavement, hard shift is fine. On the salt, make the shift fast but easy letting the clutch out. How about that?

When Al would shift it took or traveled 1/4 mile at speed between gears , that car was bad ass and I was so lucky to time it many times. I also timed most of Carl's runs.

So... how tough is it to "find" a desired gear for a downshift?

With a four speed, third would just be to move the lever forward. Anything else might be a problem in a panic situation. I have no problem slowing down. With a roadster, just let off the gas.
