Where to get a lakester chassis built/Austin, TX area
« on: December 10, 2013, 11:58:31 PM »
Any recommendations for a chassis builder in central Texas? Willing to travel a bit. What could I expect to spend on a chassis for a stretched P-38? (I know, kind of a loaded question) I'm thinking glass nose, like Markley Brothers, fwiw.

Thanks, Emil

BTW I'm not really the character from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
I'm not really Michael Caine's character from "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels".

Closest would probably be Tim McNees.. he is in SLC but knows how to build landspeed cars  :-D

Next closest probably Mike Cook, in CA

He is in Texas.

Have you thought about starting with a used lakester?  There have been some for sale.  Then learn to weld and build your construction skills and build a car from scratch.  Like the others have mentioned the land speed cars are quite a bit different and you need to find someone that is familiar with their needs and the rules.

Others might be Joe Timney at Delaware Chassis works and also Rick White--Autopower in San Diego.

Yes, Keith Tardell is landing there and has plenty of tube bending experience and salt experience with Verns roadster and the Chili Pepper car.

Not anymore. The other 3 principals got rid of him. Keith is relocating there.

And Bob Bleed brought some of the young talent to Wisconsin with him.

All Jesse was serious about was Jesse - Bob is serious about more tangible products - you know, like Hot Rods:wink:

My prerequisite for a LSR chassis builder is one who HAS a current SCTA rule book and proves to you he can READ. To many LSR vehicles have been constructed by guys who knew everything without ever looking at one our rulebooks and when the car showed up the competitor was sent home.......good luck

T......My statement has nothing to do with Keith. It was statement for anyone looking to LSR for their endeavor. Over the years many have come and been turned away because the builder thought he new best without ever competing in LSR competition or looking to the rules which govern our safety and the safety of others. I realize many who come into LSR do not have the talent or ability to build a chassis, engine, etc themselves but go to others that think they know best and are sold something that ends up needing a lot changes. I commend Emil for coming here and asking and the responses......JD

Yes, I knew that is what you were hinting at. We have all seen it.

I should have added for the OP that having an experienced fabricator/shop so close to home is worth its weight in gold. Another good option would be Brian Bass up in Dallas. He has done work on Lee Sicilios Daytona and crews on a roadster that runs on the salt. Truly one of the best up and coming fabricators out there.

Thanks for the advice. After making some phone calls, I really don't think I can afford to pay anyone to do this, whether they build race cars for a living or a hobby. If this project is going to get off the ground, it will likely mean building a chassis in my garage. Not a total deal breaker. Elmo Rodge, a.k.a. Wayne Yeats, did an admirable job.

Thanks again for the help.
