production bike question
« on: November 06, 2013, 10:36:46 AM »
I run P/PP in ECTA. and am finally going to disassemble the motor and try to get some more power out of it.

here's my question. I'm entertaining the idea of upgrading my valvetrain, and was curious, can I change the valve size? 2nd question, can I  bore the throttle body in SCTA?

There may be a day I get out there and would want to run it in P/PP

thanks
who would have guessed it would take so long to go so fast for such a short time?

You have got to stay in the same CC window as the bike came from the manufacturer.

Read the rule book it says...

The class restrictions for cases, cylinders, heads and throttle bodies must be OEM,  subject to the caveat...any performances enhancements must be out of view...

There are other restrictions that you have to take into account also such as exhaust and accessories, along with others, so read the rules carefully.

By the way what class size are you running.

P/PP-1350-4.  [engine is 1203cc] at the moment the bike is factory stock, we did the required safety mods, and installed speed rated tires. changed the gearing [retaining the OEM belt].

only mods so far are, ceramic bearings in wheels and trans, scorpion clutch, primary gearing change, set of plugs, high performance lubricants and race fuel.

I do run a shift light in ECTA for safety, but know I must remove it in other sanctions

we have been 144.501mph with a very kind tailwind but she lives in the 140mph to 142mph range

so its time to open her up. She makes 98hp and 89tq at 6800rpm. with the above mods and still using the factory ECM

I thought I heard something about the valve size and throttle body size, was just wondering.

p.s. in ECTA, we can bump up classes. so I have run it in 1650,2000, 3000 cc classes

thanks

one more thing, the OEM muffler has internal modifications!

not visible, but the sound gives it away! lol!

The outlet diameter of the muffler is a tech item, so make sure that is right. after market ECM may be considered an illegal accessory now, I'd call to verify that before spending any money on one.

The 1350 P-PP class at Bonneville has a tough record to run on 152+, so you'll have a big hill to climb.

Have fun.

muffler is OEM on the outside, outlet is factory !

the old Maxton record is 157 or 158mph

it would be nice to get there someday, but I'm having a real blast anyways.

You've got that bike running awful good now. Is it a Sportster? You must have one hell of a good tuck also.

I don't believe the old 157 or 158 record, somethings up with that. Other words I'd have to see that to believe it.

all modifications out of view... must look stock... from there you are wide open, any motor mod is allowed, including boring or stroking to class limit that the production bike would fall in, ported heads, hi compression, big valves...  The intake venturi size wording has been removed, so I would guess you can open those up if you think they are restricting power as long as you use the stock airbox.
Where you may be at a disadvantage is fairing... if you are running an open bike in P, you could have to run against a bike that has a factory fairing.

I agree with Stainless, The 1350 record was set by a Beull with Fairing, Makes a big difference in required HP.

I ran with a CVO Dyna with front controls, what a ride, but not very Aero.

Maxton record, P/PP-1350/4, Team Cooked Goose, Sidney Conn, Mar-02, 158.235

Our bike is a 2001, Buell X1 White Lightning. it has a windscreen, but the rest of the bike has the aero of a deformed rock!

Tuck.....depends on the amount of burgers, beer, and hot wings I consume. I do try my best to form myself to the bike and get my butt up on the rear seat by half track, toes tucked in, elbows on tank, chin on tank!

we have tried many different riding styles, gearing changes and rider positions.

at this point. if we gear it for the rear wheel speed of 155+ the OEM engine wont pull it, if we drop the gearing to pull to red line we run out of track. so with leaving 1000rpm's on the table we are stuck in the 140mph to 142mph zone. unless mother nature gives us a tail wind [not common in Wilmington]

so its engine time!

thanks rouse and stainless1 for your responses

It isn't called "Team Cooked Goose" for nothing. . .  "Team Cooked Buell" just doesn't fall trippingly from the tongue.
