1" wheel nut seat angle
« on: October 26, 2013, 02:22:57 PM »
I just discovered something about wheel nuts. The 1" hex nuts with 1/2-20 threads that I got from Marsh Racing to mount their wheels have a 45 degree seat angle. March racing wheels and standard passenger car wheels have a 60 degree seat angle on them. The 1" hex nuts sold by Summit, Jegs  etc. all have 45 degree seats. I have not been able to find 60 degree seat angle nuts with a 1" hex. Whats up here?

I'd call Marsh and ask-- maybe the "60 degree" is a misprint.

I didn't get the 60 degree from Marsh-I measured it. All standard pre-metric age stamped steel wheels are chamfered for 60 degree nuts. I just read something on another post about the 1" requirement applying to aluminum and mag wheels only, True?

1" lug nuts have a 90 degree taper.  It's 45 and 45 on each side.  Regular wheels have 60 degree tapers which is 30 and 30 on each side.  You have to have your wheels machined.

might be easier to machine the nuts...  :|

Az...1 inch requirement is for all wheels over 17" or wheels with tires over 29" diameter going 200+MPH.

Read 2.G multiple times... it helps to not read into it.... oh, that applies to everything in the book

I'm going to talk to Marsh tomorrow since they supplied the nuts with their wheels, but I think I will just machine the 60 degree angle on the 45 degree (single side angle, 90 degree included) nuts and be done with it.

Thanks for all the input. I have measured the taper seats in the wheels several times and with different protractors and angle finders since I started this. Because of used seat distortion and only 15 degrees per side difference between the two angles, I'm not sure of my previous conclusions. I'll talk to Marsh in the am. May have facial egg here.

Well, I talked to Marsh today and he said their shop order for my wheels (the wheels were ordered in early 2012) specified that the 5 on 4 3/4 pattern was to be chamfered to 90 degrees. The wheels have a dual pattern and they only recut the chamfer on the pattern the customer is using. Since my wheels have been mounted and dismounted many times, the chamfer on the holes gets a little galled and this makes the chamfer angle hard to measure. After studying and measuring awhile, I found it much easier to measure the chamfer on the 4 1/2" hole pattern since they were virgin unused holes. Bad assumption on my part. The 5 on 4 1/2 pattern is still as produced (60 degree). I put the wheels on the mill and cleaned up the galled chamfers(90 degree)-good to go now. Thanks for everyones input.

Use some grease or anti-seize on the face, it will help.

hmmmmm, that beat me. Reading that it seems we weren't obliged to have them,We have 28's on 15's. The &*#^#*^W#ing things were made from range bred, grain fed unobtainiite it seems judging by the price I paid for them......dunno what you guys are paying but there was only one supplier here, I think I was stood over for something like 6 bucks a pop. That hurts when lug nuts are generally regarded as a found object.

....and yeah, I put antisieze all over them....yes Colonel "special jumping grease".

James, I thought you would have had G find a piece of 1 inch Hex, whack off pieces, thread them and turn a taper on them....
Just because you aren't required to use them doesn't mean you shouldn't.

Which is exactly what I was thinking......not like me to miss a fine interpretation of the rules...HOWEVER they had been deemed necessary by the tech here, who am I to argue?. They are a simple measure, arguments tend to unearth complicated issues that may be far more difficult to remedy, resolve or even er, discuss.........When the man with the gun asks you to jump, jump, lest he tells you to.

I'm pretty sure there is a crow bar supporting the side of my compost bay that if I am correct is hex and I'll be darned if it ain't 1"....seems like a hard way to save $120... Then I'd have to listen to someone complaining about why I didn't just buy them..........

hmmm...?
I just got Roto-Faze email ID from Mr Google and it bounced.
Time to do a lil more googling or maybe Roto-Faze doesn't do this anymore?
