I wish I could be there next year but that won't happen. 2015 is my aim with or without a car. :-D

Try and do next year w/o the car. You will learn so much and be ahead of the curve when the car is done.
Trent, besides the learning, do you honestly believe I'd want to come back home after being there?.  :-D

Probably about early September, judging by this year's weather.

I would go without the car first - get a feel for the place and the event - crew for somebody, but take the time to take in as much of it as possible.

Watch the tech guys go over a few cars and take notes.

By Tuesday, it's slow enough you can get some real face time with the tech guys, and considering how far you'll be bringing your ride, it might just save you a boatload of frustration.

It's so much greater than the sum of its parts, and there are a hellofalotof parts.

And attend the Rookie Meeting.

So then, we'll see you next August . . .

Sounds pretty good to me Mike! And I know a guy you could crew for...

. . . some when the racers left in 2013.  All vary.  And some tell you one date, and then use another.  If I were you, I'd start trying now.

SpeedWeek reservations are usually allowed around the beginning of February.  The date will be announced in advance - or someone here will ask the casinos and then post.  Many of the lodging facilities will be booked up solid (for racers, at least) within a few days of when they're available.  I'd try calling around to the motels (not the casinos) and asking when they'll take reservations, and then ask to be put on the list of folks that want rooms.  And then call on the day or two before the date you've been given and see if they'll give you a reservation then.  And then call on the date they told you they'd begin.  Yes, it really is that bad.

And when you make a reservation -- don't be too shocked when they ask for a big deposit which will probably be non-refundable, and the room rates will by WAY higher than the regular room rates, and they're likely to require a minimum stay of - say, 5 nights or so whether you asked for that many or not.

The easiest way to reserve a room for SpeedWeek is to ask to have a room next year -- when you check out this year.  Some motels will do that -- have customers that have been staying in the same motel for years, or maybe just this year - - and since you've already made it to the list -- you're able to reserve for next year.  There have been times when even that didn't work - like when a motel gets sold during the intervening year, but give it a try if you can figure out how to do that.

Does this sound like gloom and doom for SpeedWeek lodging?  Sorry -- but by and large, you'll run into some or all of what I've mentioned here.  Good luck, and feel free to ask more questions.  Maybe one of us will have some ideas that'll help you.

Last year we left for the salt on a Wed.  About 20 miles outside Bake the old RV took a nosedive.  We managed to get home by midnight.  Load up the pickup on Thursday morning.  Look on landracing.  Nick Arias III had a room for sale.  Quick call room booked.  Off we go.  Meet Nick on the salt, get key, done.  My wife loved the hotel as she had a nice bed, bathroom and didn't have to cook.

A friend from Denmark was over for a vacation that year. He and his girlfriend showed up on the salt on the opening Sat.  "Got a room Ivan?"  "No but I am going into town to get one."  An hour or so later he was back.  Found a room no problem.  It was only for a couple of days and he had to leave.  Found another room without any hassle.

This year did I panic and book in Feb?  Nope.  Around mid July landracing came to the rescue again.  Bought a room from a peerson who couldn't make it.  Last year it was the Rainbow.  This year the Red Garter.  No problem.

I would hesitate to use the word "nightmare".   If you don't get a room before they are all gone just keep an eye on landracing and a room will turn up.
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

paso...if you want to race strong enough...you will go and race...accomodations will fall into
place....im sure the Aussies chuckle when folks over here let accomodations play a part into
racing at one event or another......

there is free camping, paid camping, showers at the truck stop, rooms come available
ALL the time....

One thing that tends to be forgotten is that Salt Lake City is less than 2 hours, and there are a ton of rooms available around the airport, which I've driven in an hour and a half.

I know people who spend more time than that on their commutes to work.

Yeah, it's certainly not the ideal, but if you absolutely have to have a room, and you aren't averse to getting up early, you can find yourself waiting in line at Lands End before the roach coach has the coffee on.

Goggles did a brief series of photographs a few years back of the road to Gairdner.  We're fortunate in that we don't have to bring jerry cans of fuel, and we're not obliged to open and close gates on dirt roads to keep the kangaroos and camels from migrating from one end of the country to the other.

We just turn at exit 4 . . .

I have been camping at Bonneville for 20+ years.

This year at Speedweek my son and I were offered a motel room at half price for the week.

I told him I thought we should take it.

He said I would be staying in it alone because he would be in the tent at the bend.

I think he gets this Bonneville thing.   :-D
