Jon, we had quite storm here in wester SD....lots of rain thurs...then 31 inches
of snow thru sat, in Rapid City, 43 inches in the Black Hills...but here in RC and
I-90 melting quickly...interstate should be dry in a day or so...

you know you and any other LSR's are welcome to stay at our place in Rapid City if ever
coming through....

plenty of "Monuments to see"...you can help me relocate some cones the Fed Govt. ordered
to be placed along the shoulder of the public Highway to block people from  "views" of Mt. Rushmore (apparently
closing access to the monument wasnt inflicting enough pain)...

ok pot stirrer...on standby...

thoughts again with the Shootout racers and THE COOKS...!

Well, well -- so much for Junior calling me to tell me the news.  Nancy just saw this on her Facebook page:

Mike Cook's Land Speed Shootout
Its on fellas!
Unless something changes the Shootout will begin on Thursday Morning. Watch this space tomorrow for another update. The accompanying photos were taken at the 3-mile looking toward floating mountain and back toward the highway.

10/06/13 5:00 pm
...

So there you have it.  Now I've got to figure out how to get there - if I can get there at all - in time.  I admit I wasn't expecting to go -- have the sale of the business (storage biz) to attend to.  I'll see if that can be put off a week or so.

I've heard from an "unnamed source" that Mike Sr. is moving ahead, planning to run the event, but as of today (Sunday) there are only 4 or 5 miles of useable salt.  Another call is to be made tomorrow (Monday) which could be the final word, since we ain't got much time left.  Mike has a permit that expires on the 14th, so things is still up in the air...more or less.  'Course if the gummint is still shut down, how would they be able to do anything if it went a day or 2 longer?  Aren't all the BLM rangers furloughed until further notice?

I think all the Law Enforcement types are considered "essential", so they'll still be working.

As a lowly aircraft inspector, I'm "non-essential" and furloughed, so see you there!

Bummer -- I couldn'tget my phone to work wi-fi so had to find a McDonalds to p9ost this.

Mike Cook called me a while ago with a report on the salt.  It's not ready yet -- there's the long and short of it.  From the 0 to the 7 it's hard and fine for racing -- but from the seven to about the 10 or so it's wet enough that -- while you can't see water on the surface, drive down it and you'll see water filling the tire tracks.  That's not good.

The weather forecast is favorable for drying -- some winds today and high in the upper 70s - so maybe it'll continue to get better.

Mike says they've got the course pretty well set up.  All of the cones are in place, and the PVC for the mile markers is there.  He also said that, just for a test, he dragged the cutting drag -- not the polishing one - for a abot a mile over near the dike (where it wouldn't interfere with the race track.  He said he found good salt and not water -- so that's a good sign, too.

Akatiff, Manning, Nearburg -- they're all still looking forward to racing.  There well may be others -- but I was driving in the boonies and couldn't write 'em all down.  So -- stay tuned.  I'll post whenever I get more information.  IOn the meantime -- I'm about 150 miles or so from home, about to cross into Wisconsin from the U.P.  I look forward to seeing you on the salt.

Hey, SSS, not that it would matter anyway since the Bearcat is loaded (and the driver and crew becoming so).  We are heading up tomorrow unless we get a DEFINITE NO.  But I'm not sure what diff it makes if M.C. drags near the dike.  The report is that the northbound course is good, meaning up through the end of the trap (mile 6).  Dragging "near the dike" means about mile 2 - 3, part of the "good part" anyway.
Now I KNOW M.C. had a good reason to do this so this is not to flame him but wouldn't it be more informative to drag out near the 7 - 8, (in the region where there is no dike) so we could get a reading in the areas where we need one?

Jim, the dragging near the dike wa mostly to see if the drag would damage the course there -- before he'd move to the real race course.  I guess I should have been clearer.

So -- now it's about 4.20 Wendover  time - 6.20 here in west central Minnesota.  Mike just called.  The car people have decided that they will not take a chance on the course becoming good enough to race.  As of 4PM Mountain time, the F I A  meet is cancelled for this year.  Cancelled. No more waiting 'til further word, or until Wednesday.  No F I A meet in 2013.

Mike said that Mike Akatiff is willing to wait more,m and Denis is, too.  Denis will be arriving on the salt tomorrow, and between him and Ack and Cook they'll decide if they can find a place to run the bikes.  Maybe on the same course -- maybe not?  So therefore the FIM part of the meet IS NOT cancelled - at least at this time - 6.27 Minnesota.  Dan Warner is there with Cook, as is Tiny Roberts, and with Manning -- they make a pretty danged good crew to assess the salt and try to make it worthwhile for racing.

No to FIA, so far YES to FIM.  Stay tuned.
