Ok, so does anybody really know which engine Speed Demon ran yesterday and today?  As I recall, with the (386") B motor they were #715.  Then, with the (299"?) D motor, I believe they were #1715.  I left just after their run yesterday, when they were #7151.  So, was this the (347"?) C motor?   SCTA still hasn't posted results for Thursday (which they're calling "Friday"), August 15, on their website.

Also, did they run on the infamous Course No. 1 again this morning?   With 451 out the back door, I think it can be assumed that any problems they may have had were minor.

Speed Demon raced OK with no problems on course number one, I don't know for sure which engine, my guess is the repaired B motor.  :?

I think one of the issues is the way the salt cures from year to year and the drying conditions.

This year as many recall on Thursday and Friday, there were lots of areas where there was a top layer of "stick to your shoes" salt that was in the process of drying but was still too wet to cement to the layers below. As it dried out it got harder and to casual examination it appeared to be good hard consolodated salt again but I suspect that in that top layer it needs time to cross bond between the salt crystals after it "appears" to be ready to race, before it really bonds to lower layers and forms a cohesive layer.

If that is the case it might behave similar to snow crust on top of a weak layer of snow and under high shear load (ie a car sliding) the weaker top layer breaks free sooner than you would expect and results in more tendency to spin for cars that are marginal.

Maybe it needs a bit more time to cure and cross bond especially on course #1 before we consider it "ready to race".

There is probably some research out there that would help figure out the proper drying conditions and time delays (much like curing concrete needs a period of time 28 days to cure to reach full strength after it sets -- I suspect the salt does too as it also is constructed of an interlocking matrix of crystals)

Maybe BNI needs to talk to some engineering schools and see if there are some bright graduate students who would be willing to do a paper or controlled studies of how to form a really firm hard racing surface after a late July or August wet down as we had this year?

It is common knowledge that the racing surface varies from year to year but why and how does that happen? Why in two apparently similar years you get different salt behavior and racing performance out of a surface that on casual inspection is ready to race on and hard and dry?

Kind of my thoughts but way more in depth. I have some avalance study from college so your comment about the similarities between snow layers and salt layers makes sense to me.

I think that was the 15 year old, newly minted car guys. Mark is trying to get them interested.

Hearty Congrats for George and the Speed Demon Crew! Waited until the last day to put 2 awesome runs together.

The Speed Demon gets down the course with no problem because of Downforce. That car has a bunch of it making it very stable. That equates to Drag that takes HP to overcome, which is why Mr. Dutwieler comes in.

It is interesting SCTA stopped posting Spins-Crashes, reaks of NHRA.

There is a lot of speculation about the Salt Condition. It obviously had issues this year, but isn't that what makes Bonneville well Bonneville? If they didn't keep putting restrictions on Top Fuel cars you would be seeing high 300 or low 400 MPH runs on the quarter. Now that's a fast Lakester. The salt or dirt at El Mirage is the variable that the racer needs to overcome. If it rained would everyone be griping about the SCTA?

I do think that the courses should be shut down every few hours for a 20 minutes or so for a sweep and to allow a crew person to check out the track surface for grooves, soft spots, etc., at least for the higher speed vehicles.
