A little fun at the long course starting line.  There were a coupla pickups parked in a real bad place...like 100 yards downcourse and way too close  to the racing line.  The officials broadcast the license numbers and did their best to get the owners to move 'em.  One of 'em got to his truck and moved it (I think hr got an earful from the officials) but the second one never showed up.  After a few minutes, I heard a cheer from the folks around me and I saw the truck being dragged away at the end of a tow strap.  Too bad they didn't have a boot to put on it.

The first car to run was a truck, specifically a diesel.  Not nearly as much smoke as Joint Venture made but it was enough.

Finally the Poteet/Main Speed Demon got away (they had a little delay for some reason) and the motor was shootin ducks thru 1st and 2nd gear, but recovered pretty nicely to run 443 mph exit speed.  Btw, check the photogs and the kid in the Demon photo.  Just what we discussed in a different thread last week.  Sheesh!

Since I've been writing this, we've had 2 course sweeps for broken parts (one of which was Bob Merickle's stretched Metropolitan) and one flat spin.  And a helicopter has landed near the courses.  Stay tuned.

I just tried the link and got a 404 (not found) error.  Earlier today the whole SCTA site was fubar.  I guess you could say "technical problems."

JL...just think how fast it might have gone on skinny tires...

joea...just think what ANY drag car with over 500hp would do with skinny tires on asphalt.

Hey.. been there and done that in 1958 when my brother and my blown Olds street roadster got sideways on me in the traps at San Luis Obispo drags at 121 mph from spinning the 6'' drag tires.

There has been a real fast Firebird with skinneys but the amount of weight used to hook up grossly overloaded
the weight rating of the tires. Something the SCTA/BNI looks the other way on.

Here's something else to think about Joe, that 294mph ist mile was an average, top speed was 318 when it blew
just at the end of the 3 mile and before entering the 4 with 2 more miles to go.

Yea listen to the EXPERTS

Hammond just did a test pass and 242 in the 2 1/4 I believe, shut down and went 240 at the middle mile.

not sure if the announcers realize it or not, but many of these first runs are tune up runs.  For the confident and unafraid of blowing engines they may make qualifing runs, which so far there have been a few.  Amo Steele comiing up.
