SpeedWeek 2013 - the event
« on: August 07, 2013, 11:28:53 AM »
Okay -- I've locked the "pre-event SpeedWeek topic so folks don't have to go through 20 pages oif stuff to find the latest information.  This should be the one we'll use for the next week and a half, okay?

So here we sit, at nearly 9.30 AM, and no toilets.  Trevor called yesterday to confirm the units will be here this morning, so if you're out on the salt and reading this -- unh, grab a couple of clothespins or something and hold it for now.

The salt, as I reported yesterday, is the stuff that adds about a half-inch to your height for every step.  And Lynda reports that someone has already broken through into the mud - but was able to get himself unstuck without a tow.  Stay well to the right of the cones when you're driving in - and hope that it continues to be 90++F and nice winds - all the better to dry things out.  Here in the pits seems to be the worst for right now, but I see one of the drags working to removed the slushy stuff and give us a good based on which to park.  After being dragged they'll let the newly-bared salt dry for a few hours.

And like I told you testerday - bring flyswatters!!  They're everywhere.

After last year, I already packed the industrial-strength fly paper and a couple of Horror Fright electronic fly racquets in the truck.

Try a zip lock bag, some water and a few pennies in it.

Worked for us when we went camping.

Ask Lynda's daughter how well one of those zappers tasted?
Almost a Darwin award.

Also ask one of Lynda's daughters about being struck by lightning at Lands End.

Another time lightning struck the flag pole at Lands End and destroyed it.

Don't tell me she put her tongue on one!

Sorry to misslead; too much of a rush.
It was her boy friend.
Lynda said the look on his face was priceless; and she nearly rolled on the deck from laughing so hard!

Here's what happens when I don't pack the socket set just right.  It's kinda like the old kids' card game:  52 Pickup...but here it's 105 Socket pickup.

Here they are - the first photos from the salt, sort of. . .

Fred Dannenfelzer's new liner:

Ice is available on the salt.  I don't think you can read the little sign, but it says "Open 6AM - 6PM"

Here's what to look for as you drive down the course.  Floating Island is at the end of the line:

The salt is really dang smooth, even way out there near the seven mile where it is usually pretty well covered with pressure ridges:

And finally -- a few of your set-up crew taking a well deserved break.  Note that they're sitting on the back porch of an SCTA trailer.  I'm teasing them, but it is amazing how quickly things get put together out here.  We dropped off our pit trailer yesterday and there was - basically - nothing set up but a few of the roads and courses were being dragged.  Today -- wow, what a difference.  And yes, today there are toilets.

Love that line.

Can you imagine Freddie in a streamliner?

Torg would have been impressed.
