What tires to run at Wilmington
« on: August 02, 2013, 02:07:40 PM »
Hello,

I am new to land speed racing and ran my 47 Ford P/U at the Ohio mile last Sept. for my first meet. I was teched to 135 mph and want to try and tech to 150 mph. I ran coker bis-ply tires last your with no issue but need to get speed rated tires. I am limited right now to a 5 inch wide rim unless I have custom 7 or 8 inch rims built with my needed 2 1/2 back spacing. I was going to run drag front runners all the way around. Is this a good idea or sohuld I wait and have wheels made to run drag radials in the back. I am only running a 355ci/400hp SBC with a 3:15 rear gear. Any input is welcome and is stabilty or tractions a concern at the speeds I want to run? Hoping to go 145 mph.

Thanks,

Kevin

Same question here, though I've got just under 800whp on tap and may be in the 200mph range.  Currently have Frontrunners on the car all around, planning for World Finals, if that gets rained out though I'm pointing my rig north to Wilmington, OH for the ECTA meet, which is when this question becomes more relevant.

Widest I can probably fit would be a 7-8" wide drag radial...  Gonna go check what wheel offset I'd need now...

Concrete Mile mile and half.

I run a 302 that dynoed at 472 HP at 8,000 RPM. I ran M/T Drag Radials at Maxton which had bad traction and a very rough surface. We set some records in the 167 range with M/T Drag Radials with no problems. There is evidence that the tires were spinning slightly but that is probably Maxton's rough surface unloading the suspension. Should not be an issue in Ohio.

If you don't want to spend the money on tires and rims, try the front runners and nurse it off the line or push start.

With 800hp you really are gonna want to run drag radials. Another option is Hoosier R6 road race tires. That is what all the big power mile cars seem to be running. They may not be as soft as drag radials but folks have had tire failures with drag radials in the mile, when running well over 200mph.

Please at least call ECTA if you aren't going to make so someone on the "wait list" can get in on the fun.
