M/C tires
« on: June 25, 2013, 07:34:04 PM »
When should heat cycling be done, before or after being shaved?

Also, should both front and read tires be shaved.

You thoughts.

Bill, how fast are you planning and with what tires?  That is necessary info to help get you the correct answer.  Lots of folks including us have run Bridgestone BTs to 200 no shave, no issue.

Stainless1;
Im looking at BT-023 (160/60ZR17 rear) (120/70ZR17 front). Will be running in 1350 M-G, current record is 200.750.
Our expectations are 160's.

Tires must be for the record speed, not your speed  :|

With the record over 200 you need to read the tire section carefully... I am out of town and no rulebook but I think records over 200 require racing purposes tires.  Is the 023 the street tire or racing?  Search for the old tire threads, there are several.

This rule has kept me out of SCTA events.  My figuring is if the tires are speed rated for the speeds the bike should go, they are OK.  The AMA and FIM have the same opinion.

Most of us are running for records and planning to go faster than the record so tires compliant with the speed of the record is not unreasonable.  Yes I know bikes have gone 273 on the salt on street tires.... YMMV  :| :|

I'm sure they would let you run with a speed limit based on your tires.  Write the tech chair and ask

Tires are about the least expensive safety item most racers have to deal with as far as I'm concerned.

The last thing I'd want to do is wreck my bike because I tried to save $20 or $30 bucks on a tire. How smart is that?

Maybe it's just me, but I am not going to run tires that are not rated at least for the class record and speed I intend to run.

The SCTA rules on class record are an OK bare minimum, I'd tend treat the rules just as that "Bare Minimum". If I have plans to run beyond the speed rating required by the class record, I'd run the appropriately rated  tires for the predicted speed.

Thanks to all that have replied.
I'm still curious about your thoughts on heat cycling of tires, before shaving or after?
Should both front and rear tires be shaved?

LSR tires i have had shaved were not heat cycled , and the front street tire i am using was not heat cycled either
planning on shaving some more this yr , they will also not be used prior to shaving , not realy considered heat cycling as there is not the chance to do so

but i'm not sure why you would worry about shaving at those speeds ?

Who are you getting to shave them ? someone with experiance like Nate or Butch ?

Nate Jones would have the answers to your questions.

he would be my pick for that type of tire work.
