Salt conditions
« on: June 21, 2013, 12:59:47 PM »
BNI just reported on Face Book:

The Pre-Trip Team of Bill Lattin, Miriam Macmillan, Jim Dunn, Jim Jensen, Chris Douglas and Alastair Macmillan, has just arrived back from a 4 day trip to groom the salt in preparation for SpeedWeek. We were joined by USFRA members Larry Volk and Garry Wilkinson. The team found great salt conditions – nine plus miles on Course 1, eight plus miles on Course 2, five plus miles on Course 3 and four miles on Course 4. The depth of the salt varied considerably, but the 600,000 plus tons of salt pumped back by Intrepid this year, appears to have made a difference. Of course the weather conditions the salt flats experience in the next 40 days will play a big part in what we eventually get, but it is a good start. A huge thank you to the group who worked flat out for two days – 7am to 5pm, locating and marking courses, and dragging many, many miles. We also took the opportunity to touch base with lots of businesses in town, putting up posters, and continuing good public relations.

We look forward to seeing you all on the salt very soon.

I wonder if there's anyone with more miles traveled on the salt than Jim Dunn (at least in modern times, so to speak).  He's always driving up and down, back and forth, before and during events, and during the pre-event trips like this.  Jim Jensen is probably a close second -- but Jim is one of the (many) unsung heroes out there.  As a racer that enjoys being out there to take advantage of what this crew - and all of the volunteers do -- thanks very much.  We'll see you on the salt.

Bob Higbee is the Champion - More years, more miles.

He instructed Jim Jensen, that is a condition if you marry his daughter. At his advanced age Jim Dunn will soon need a replacement.

WHO is ready to step up?

PS- Thank you gentlemen

Dan, I'm not ready, but I'm certainly willing.  I would love to help - unfortunately, proximity, a four-letter word and the cooperation of an otherwise very supportive wife stands in the way.

I keep trying to twist Kate's arm.  "We should just move to Wendover and be done with it", is the argument I try to make.  She just looks around the parking lot of the Rainbow and says, "Well . . . nnnnnnnno."

I spoke with a customer on the phone today who was just at Lands End yesterday.  She told me it's dry, and she wished me luck.

This part of the program seldom gets the attention it deserves.  Thanks to everyone for making this possible, and for doing it in such a way that the entry fees remain manageable.

4 courses again - that's very good news.

Thanks to all the SCTA/BNI crew and others that prepare the salt and make this a "Can't Miss" Event.

Racers, Crews and Officials deserve our gratitude and appreciation, too.

See you on the salt.

Just returned from 4 days on the salt prepping the Shootout course. Last year there were lost miles due to the lack of salt. Lost about 1 3/4 mile on the start end(highway) and approx. 2 miles on the floating mountain end. This year there is color(white, if that is a color) at both ends. Granted the salt there is not the best but, is in recovery. The ends were wheel packed and will set to cure for a month. The 2 to 11 miles sections were dragged and polished. This area will cure and just need minor touch up next month.

This good course will make for a very exciting Shoot Out in Sept. The whole lakebed is looking great for Speed Week, WoS and Finals.
